Ampalaya also known as bitter melon in english and it seldom mixed with other vegetable because of its strong bitter taste.. I like eating ampalaya because it is both a nutritious vegetable and a trusted medicinal herb.It Grows abundantly in many region in Asia and South America.I like it most when it cooked as pinakbet together with other vegetables..One of my favorite dish is mongo because of young ampalaya shoots and leaves.. No, I have never eaten amapalaya but I see it all the time at the Chinese store where I shop for vegetables. How do you cook it ? does the bitter flavour go away during the cooking process? What health benefits does it have and what is mongo? I can't ask anybody at the Chinese store because the staff barely speaks English.

hi lindalinda! as i have stated in my post below, there are many ways of how to cook it. but those that i have mentiones are filipino dishes. i also have stated below some of the health benefits that i've read. my mom taught me 2 ways of how to remove the bitter taste of it before cooking, 1 is to let it stay in water after an hour or so, 2 is to rub it with salt (make sure that it's already chopped). i've check the internet & aside from it's english term (bitter melon), i've learned that it has a mandarin name which is ku gua. mongo on the other hand is also a vegetable. it's actually a mongo bean. the seeds are removed from the shell & they dry it. hoe i helped you in your concern..

I have never heard of this melon. But I will admit that the name of it is kind of snazzy and sounds cool! I don't know if I'd like it, but if I ever see it in the market I'll be sure to get some to test!

how many times i tried to eat ampalaya, but my teeth did not convince to chew it, maybe it is because of its bitter taste, until now, ill keep on convincing myself to eat ampalaya, i remembered once my mom dare me to eat ampalaya, she prepared with the softdrinks beside it, but, when im going to shoot it in my mouth, my face becomes very hard to draw,

I do eat Ampalaya but I am not fond of eating it though. I can tolerate eating it now that I am an adult but if I can chose my food Ampalaya would not be included in the menu. I do agree that these vegetable is really nutritious. It is the source of the famous herbal medicine that claims to lower sugar for those that have diabetes. Although eating the vegetables is different from taking the tablet made from ampalaya.

When I was still a child and you would tell me that I will be eating ampalaya when I grow up, I wouldn't believe you one bit. It is bitter to the taste and up to this day if not cooked well, I wouldn't eat it. It is good for the body. Our family cooks it with egg and sotanghon. What I do like is ampalaya leaves on mongo.

oh i love ampalaya! the fruit itself or the leaves is very delicious. i know it's bitter but i don't know why i find it so yummy. maybe because i just love eating vegetables. i've read about ampalaya & i found out that it's good for people having problems with their stomach such as dyspepsia, indigestion or constipation. but it also has its side effects such as making ulcers worse and casues heartburn. although currently we believe that it can cure diabetes, studies show that it's not 100% accurate as it can only demonstrate improvement in health but not totally cure diabetes (as some tablets in the form of food supplement is sold here in the philippines). i hated amplaya when i was a kid. my mom used many tactics just for me to eat it. she would say that ampalaya improves blood circulation, increased red blood cells & helps risk anemia. like i care before right? hehe.. i haven't read anything about ampalaya with the reasons she gave me. but when i learned to eat ampalaya, i finally listened to her regardless if it's true or not. :p this are the dishes with amplaya that i love: pinakbet, swam mais with amplaya leaves, mongo with either amplaya leaves/fruit, blanched amplaya leaves with tomatoes & fish sauce served with grilled fish, grilled ampalaya fruit with fish sauce & ginger, chicken with amplaya, amplaya & eggs. yum yum!! boy i love to eat! :p

I'd kill and die for Ampalaya! Just kidding! I love Ampalaya. It depends on the one who prepares Ampalaya but i love it most of the time especially when my sister if the one cooking. I like the bitter appeal of Ampalaya. I imagine that the bitter flavor of Ampalaya is full or iron and i need lots and lots of iron because i stay up late.
