I have a degree in Psychology and yeah it's about reading people's minds but not in the way like psychics do the job. Psychology rely on tools like psychological testings and observation. There are norms to be followed and set of strict standardized rules. There are lots of branches of Psychology. From Forensics, Abnormal, Physiological, Developmental, Industrial and many more.

I've never formally studied psychology (as in going to school for it) but I have been studying it on my own since i was a teenager (starting with Sociology when I was about 14 or so)...I particularly love Criminology and Abnormal Psych and yes you can basically "read" a person with it...I also have the bonus feature in me of being able to suss a person out very quickly in other ways as well...

As Modstar said, there are many branches of psychology. A general knowldge of human psychology will give you clues to how people tend to think, and tests may tell you more of what they actually think. But there is no such thing as mindreading.

Yes and No. Im in university taking a minor is psych and i still remeber my first year professor saying if youre talking this course to read peoples mind youre not only in the wrong class but youre in the wrong school. What he saying was that youre not going to become a mind reader or a human lie detector by knowing basics of psychology, and even if you do pursue psychology it takes alot more than casual conversation to concretly know what someone is thinking. However the more psychology you know, the more you will understand why people act the way they do, this is more in the feild of social psychology.

Psychology is more about understanding behaviour and how the mind works. To be able to do that, observation, interviews and a whole lot of evaluation processes are involve. There are many theories in Psychology that one has to understand whole heartedly to be able to assess a person's psychological state. My college degree required me to have a background knowledge on Psychology and Human Behavior. With that I develop a huge interest in Child Psychology so I took an post grad online program on it and I can say it is pretty interesting and cool. To give you a concrete example of the theories, there's Sigmund Freud's psychoanalytic theory. Its a whole bunch of concepts to read but here's one example, an infant who was not able to get thru a healthy oral stage, meaning his oral needs were not satisfied (in great connection with bre*stfeeding), may grow up as adult with oral issues (oral fixation)-such as smoking, or any mannerisms tha involves the mouth... theres a whole lot more, thats why I commend all the psychologist out there who do great in their chosen field. Good luck with your interest, you can do some readings to satisfy them. Have a great day!
