Would You Take in a Stray Cat or Would You Take it to a Shelter?

Last year around October, someone dropped this particular cat off along with a sibling and the cat started living across the road in our ditch. His sibling disappeared and I don't know where he/she disappeared to. Every time I would bring the dogs out, the cat would come across the road to visit with the dogs as though he had adopted them as his friends. The dogs loved him and were always happy to see him. I started leaving some food and water for the cat in the woodshed. October turned into November and the windchills started to set in. Both my husband and I agreed to give this cat a chance and bring him in out of the cold. If he pee'd or pooped in the house, then we could not keep him. The first night he tried to make a home in the cat box which was filled with clean litter for him to use. I had to keep taking him out of there and placing him elsewhere to sleep. Finally he got the message. He used the cat box and never messed anywhere in the house. The next day we decided we were going to take this cat to the vet. Keep in mind that from the very beginning it was our understanding that this was a female cat because we didn't see any male parts. So I take this cat to the vet to get fixed. I call later to check on "her" only to have the vet tell me that this, in fact, is a male cat who was already fixed. :)))) He is about 2 years old now. We love this cat and someone gave him up for a reason, but we are the lucky ones. He loves the dogs and he gets along with the other 3 cats in our home. What a beautiful loving animal that we could thankfully give a home to. For whatever reason, some people do not take their cats to a shelter and instead decide to drive out to the country and drop them off by people's homes. Alot of people will also drop the cats off by farms because then the cats can mouse there. If you had a cat or cats dropped off, would you take the animal(s) in or would you take them to a shelter?

I take in countless cats and try to find new homes for them. Ejits who don't fix their pets, or get tiered of them, dump them all the time. Grrr. We don't have a cat shelter in my town, so that's not even an option. But people can drive to the next town, which has a shelter, or call a no kill rescue for rehoming.

ah, a critter campaigner on behalf of those critters looking for homes. That is really wonderful. I have always been one that if I was going to own animals, then they were going to be fixed. I have gone through my share of "cats in heat" and that is not a pretty picture nor is it a pretty smell! It is pretty inexpensive to get an animal fixed and alot of shelters offer a discount for adopting an animal if the animal is not already fixed.

All my rug rats are fixed. I educate people on the benefits of spaying and neutering. What's in it for them. In reality I think that if you take an animal you have it fixed... end of story. It's not even an issue in my mind of will I or won't I, or that I can eat for 1 month for the cost of a spay. It's just part of being responsible. I don't think is right for people to let their animals breed as long as there are not enough homes for EVERY animal born. We are a long way from having waiting homes for each and every pet animal born. If I found a genie in a bottle that would be one of my wishes.

i have saved a kitten which was left in the bushes and took care of it and became a part of the family. there are no shelters for animals here so there are stray cats almost everywhere. but most people i knew get to rescue kittens because the kittens can be trained easily to like come to you than mature or bigger cats.

I just bet that kitty is truly thankful that you took him out of the streets and gave him a nice home with food and a loving family.

That is wonderful that you were able to rescue a stray. It sounds that he eats a meal similar to that of a human. But what is important is that he is happy, loved, fed and has been given a place to live. Other cats are not so fortunate.
