I'd like to give that manufacturer a piece of my mind!

Yes, I would tell him/her off good! Imagine! I can turn off the ringer to my phone, but then the base of the phone, the answering machine, doesn't turn off. Now what sense does that make? If I wanted to turn off only the handset, and take the phone outside, well, why would I take it with me if it's turned off? But why turn it off when I'm in the house, if the dang base is going to ring anyway! - I can turn the whole thing off, sure, but then no one gets their messages.. Do you ever like to have a day when you don't have the sound of the ringing phone? Or am I the only one?

Ours you can turn off the ringer on both. We used to have one made by the same company, Uniden, that had the same problem that you are having now. You turn off the ringer on the handset and the base still rings. It was very annoying. I wanted to turn the ringer off so the baby could nap in peace, but it was impossible.

We got rid of our house phone a couple of years ago. All we ever got on it was telemarketing calls anyway. Anyone who really needed to get hold of us had/has our cell numbers. Yes, it used to drive me insane when I was home on my day off, and the phone would ring 30 or 40 times a day. Nobody I knew, just the telemarketers. I always just disconnected it at the wall on those days. But that is weird that your base rings.

Well, that doesn't sound very well thought out. You expect manufacturers to be the greatest people ever, always making us cool stuff, but I guess they are human too! You never know if you're going to get an emergency call, so I would probably always keep it on anyway.
