Vote bank politics. In a ‘secular’ democratic country, the desire of millions to read a book was squashed without a second thought just because a section of population might feel offended by that book. It’s the same old myopic populist vote bank politics that does good to no community in particular and further creates sense of alienation and deprivation amongst all. Its this kind of vision post-independence that has brought India to where she is now…at the crossroads of terrorism and democracy.

it was banned for securing muslim vote. congress party which was ruling was sure of losing elections. they did lose the next elections. frankly in my opinion there is no need to ban books because a community dislikes it. you will get enough copies of Satanic Verses at throw away prices. i got it as a gift. it was sent to be by a lady from UK. what i got was an ebook. i donot think anything that is offensive. i doubt any muslim has read it with a clear mind. in my interaction with few muslims, none of them read it, most of them are confused as to what those satanic verses were. anyway, these things will die down and people dont care much about it. Dan Brown's DaVinci code to had the same effect. people this time read it, watched the movies, some even bought the DVD's for their personal collections. yes, christians themselves did it. that is good step that people are educating themselves rather than listening to what the uneducated priest dishing out to believers.
