What do you do when you see an animal on the road , do you swerve to avoid hitting the animal and what if there is another car coming then what do you do ? What if the animal was a rat or a coyotee or a small squirel would you still avoid trying to hit it or keep going because you don't want to risk getting in an accident because you swerved ?

I always try to avoid hitting an animal of any kind in the road. If i had a bricke wall on either side of me or a car on both sides, no i wouldnt swerve but i would at least try to slow down so that it would give the animal more time to move, if it was injured and couldnt and i couldnt come to a complete stop, i would have no choice but to keep going, but it would be a very disturbing experience if i knew i did further harm to the animal.

I always try to avoid hitting anything as well . Thankfully I have never been in a situation where there was a car coming because insinct takes over and I don't know what would happen as I would not want to hit the oncoming vechile either :) Thank you for your response .

I don't have my liscense yet but think I would do this cause I woudl feel so bad if I hit an animal and would feel that it was my fault even if it came out in front of me. They say you shoudl not do this but we wont know what we will do until it comse out in front of us. If a car was coming I dont think I woudl cause it would be worse to hit a car and hurt someone then an animal but it woudl not be good cause it could cause an accident if you swerve or if you don't swerve and then hit it if it is a big animal.

I don't know about you, but most of the people I know drive down the street aiming at the poor defenseless creatures. Just kidding, LOL.

I live in the country, so it isn't as difficult to swerve and miss hitting an animal, the traffic worries aren't quite as bad as in town. I do swerve as much as possible to miss hitting ANY animal. I don't believe in hitting an animal just because it's in the road. If the choice was between hitting the animal and having an accident, I would reluctantly choose to hit the animal. Usually though, I can straddle the animal (if it's small enough) with the car and avoid hitting it. That's great especially when it's a skunk!!

If i were in a situation where i saw an animal but my life is at stake i would not risk my life getting into an accident because of trying to save an animal. I would'nt let my husband and kids suffer in pain when i am badly hurt or worst passed away because of trying to avoid hitting an animal. An aunt of mine had done that and she was pregnant. Because of what she did she passed away and the baby inside her womb never had the chance to live. I do value animals but as much as i value them i also value my own life and the people i love.

I am so sorry to hear about your aunt and the babay , that is so sad but true that when we swerve we can be placing our lives in danger as well . Thank you for your response .

No I won't swerve. Although I am an animal lover and I hate cruelty to animals, I won't dare to put the life of my passengers and that of the other cars at risk because of an animal. Human life is much more valuable than that of an animal. However I would my best not to kill the animal if possible.

Yes, I will swerve to avoid hitting an animal with my vehicle. It actually happened to me a few days ago. It was dark and I was driving home. I had just finished going around a corner, when I saw a possum walking in the middle of the road. I didn't want to hit it so I swerved to the right a little. I didn't dare go over too far to the right in fear that I'd go into the ditch (it's a 2 lane road with barely any shoulder). I was successful in avoiding the possum, but I don't ever want to go through that again. I would rather slow down and be able to stop, if necessary, then proceed with caution so that I don't hit an animal or get myself into an accident because of it. That goes for any animal that happens to be on the road, not just cute little cuddly ones. So what about you sam, what do you do in a situation such as this?

I don't swerve, but I do slow down to try and miss things. I have been driving behind a few trucks before that actually swerve to HIT an animal on the road.

If possible I will swerve to avoid the animal but I am not going to swerve into the lane of an oncoming car. I would avoid the collison with the car rather than the animal. I would never hit an animal with my car on purpose though it would always be an accident and I would avoid it if at all possible.

If I am driving and I see an animal in the road such as a deer or a cat or dog then if I no one is behind me I will slow down and try to stop, and wait for the animal to get out of the road, because I do not like running over animals because it makes me really sad,but if I see a rat or an animal like that then I will do my best to avoid it but I have a less chance of hitting something like that since it is so small, but I would never swerve because if I swerve I take the chance of hitting another call which could hurt me or my fiance or the driver of another car.

I always try my best to avoid hitting an animal with my car. I'll either swerve to miss it or, if there's a car coming the other way, I'll slow down and sometimes even stop to avoid hitting an animal. I accidentally hit a rabbit one day and I cried! I hate hurting anything!

I know what you mean , I would cry if I ever hit anything . I cry when someone else does when I am with them so would hate to see myself if I was the one who did it . Thank you for your response .

Hi ya samtaylorskykierajen I don't think I could say what I would do because I think it is a decission I would have to make in a split second. Most of the time this sort of thing happens at night time as most wild animals are nocturnal so there wouldn't be so much traffic on the road and it is relatively safe to swerve.

I normally swerve to avoid all animals just because the thought of killing one really bothers me. The only exception would be if there was oncoming traffic, or a ditch, something that could cause an accident if I swerve. Once, I hit a possum, there was no way of avoiding it. I actually cried and my entire body was shaking. I felt so awful.

I have been lucky and never hit anything yet but have been with others when they hit something and it is a horrible feeling to know that you killed or injured an animal . Thank you for your response .

The people I drive with always swerve to avoid hittting animals. In my last response to a similar discussion i mentioned a really good bus driver in town who can swerve so smoothly that no one on the bus will even notice.
