Tomato here is so expensive, the cheapest one almost cost 1 to 2 bucks per lb. In my hometown, it is just cost 10 or 20 cent. What surprise me is that I think America in the original place of tomato, and I think Americans eats this food a lot. So, why does such popular food be so expensive? Do you have any opinions? p.s. I can not enjoy my favorite tomato egg soup quite often, and I am planning to plant some tomatoes in front of my house XD

I believe tomatoes originally came from Mexico or Peru. When they were first introduced to Britain they were thought to be poisons. I have no idea why they are so expensive, especially since they grow them in hot houses now. Grow your own, you won't be sorry. Welcome to myLot!

In think all vegies and fruit is becoming expensive they used to be very reasonably priced, even lemons here in Australia are always expensive, always have been but I have noticed there are so many lemon trees in backyards, I have a tree both sides of my place and the neighbours always say help yourself, when I go visiting i always take a bog of lemons as the trees are loaded....

I think that tomatoes are so expensive now because of the Salmonella food poisoning earlier this summer. The tomato farmers had let the plants die in the fields because no one was buying them. So now they have to start over and if any farms are in the northern part of the country it is too cold for them to grow. It takes up to 125 days for most tomato plants to produce tomatoes. I think thats why they are so expensive
