How can I adjust my pattern of sleep?

I have a lot of appointments coming up for the month of October. I need to sleep less. I have so much to do and I will be spending 2 to 3 days a week at the waiting room in the doctor's office. I do not need to sleep but about 3 to 5 hours at a time. I need to ajust my sleep pattern and I don't know how to do it. Will meditation help? I know I will have to sleep. But can the body be trained to sleep a certain number of hours when you have a lot to do. Can you set your mind to do so? Any ideas are helpful?
