How to get referrals??

i want to know how you guys make referrals other than telling your own friends,how to get people you dont know as your referrals???

What I did was enter the chatroom and when chatting went smoothly that's the time I introduced myLot and gave them my referral link. They were curious and kept asking what's that website all about and if I earned already. I don't know if this is a good strategy because none of them still signed up...huhuhu..
