In my country the Identity Card is renewed every five years. It can be used instead of a passport when I travel within EU Countries. Do you think that we need a national identity card? Or do you think that it is a form of control by the government to check upon us?

The British government wants to introduce it here in the UK, but there are many who object. Government departments are known for losing laptops, disks and memory sticks containing personal information. I would not want to be compelled to carry an identity card, and if the government insists I have one I think they should pay for it, not me. To begin with they propose issuing them with all new passports or passport renewals. As I don't have a passport I won't be getting one. I think it would be useful sometimes to have one. In theory I don't object to it. I was required to show proof of identity recently when I sold my apartment, and on other occasions I have needed picture identity to prove who I am.

Hi paid2write, I read the controversy in Britain regarding the ID Cards. In Malta it has been the order of the day. You need an ID to get a government service, to go to the hospital, to open a bank account. etc etc.

Of course all of us must need a identity card. yah it is the best form where a country government control his citizen and check. The identity card is opened in our country from this year.

I don't keep my ID card with me in usual because it's not necessary. If I want to withdraw lots of money from my bank account or taking an airplane, then I have to show my ID card. In these kinds of situations then I have to keep my ID card. I love China

Hi ronaldinu, well in the USA we have to have an identity card too. But, it is usually your drivers license or like in my case a non-drivers license. This is used for many things. We must always carry it on us. There are alot of times that we need to have identity on use so it is very necessary to have some sort of identity on us. Sometime we need two forms of identity to make sure we really are us. The drivers license has our picture on it. It has become even more important to have identity since of course 9/11. We have to renew ours every 8 years I believe. So yes I do think that it is important in this day and age with everything that is going on in the world.

In my country we always had ID cards which was put in used when it comes to voting for a new President. I do not think it is being used as a form fo control by the Government, but just another form of identification for citizens who may otherwise have to carry their passports around if they do not have drivers license or some other form of photo idea which is necessary when conducting business.
