Is Silence So Hard To Achieve?

Do you appreciate silence?
Can you sit in a room with absolutely NO noise, no interference, just silence, nothing, but complete and utter silence, the silence where you can hear a pin drop!
Or does silence unnerve you, make you feel uncomfortable and are you not used to it?
I love silence, but it's so damn rare to have it silent
It's either the television blaring, dogs barking, babies crying, music played up, all night parties, cars screeching down the road like a race track, bikes too
I would just love a whole day of complete silence
But do I get it? Well my father is out so there's no television, and yet there's an irritating dog barking so I've had to close my windows and I can still hear it
People don't appreciate silence and there is always one or two selfish people who spoil the beautiful silence
So why is silence so damn hard to achieve or find?
Do you silence or do you like noise?

There is a saying silence is golden. If you live in a city it is difficult to find silence. I live in the city too but I am lucky I do not have neighbors. Only one child and I enjoy silence when he is at school. You can try moving to a quieter neighborhood where it will be easier to find silence.

Darling Wolfie...I wish you could come visit with me (again
). As you know, I live in the bush and I don't know why but today was particularly silent when I sat down this morning at my computer. I hear the occasional truck or vehicle and I know that farmer is delivering his crop or running errands. There is the laughter of children playing in the park near me and occasionally voices come to me as they pass my front yard. There is birdsong and my Lucy barking at passers by and sometimes Banjo squeaking (he doesn't meow) wanting to come in. There is no stress, no smog, no petrol fumes, no rat race, no noise. I am blessed.

i like silence alot of the time. it's not hard for me to ashieve at my house becaus i live alone.i love to have company & for my children to come but am always glad for the peace & quiet when they go home. i'm never ready for them to go i don't mean that but when they do i'm o.k. w/it. some days like yesterday i didn't see or talk to a soul all day. that's really peace & quiet, too much sometimes.

I need to have some kind of sound in the background, preferably music. Silence is annoying, because the slightest little noise will be noticed, and will make me jump. I have super sensitive hearing, and I like to be able to drown out the little distractions with a sound that i am used to, and that won't bother me.

Sometimes I close my room door and switch off telephone and cell phones not to be contacted. I do appreciate an hour of complete perfect silence.

i am a stay at home crafter/artist and both my kids are off to school each day and while i listen to the radio sometimes during the day, i mostly love the peace and quiet that an empty house can give - no one to answer to and no one that will hassle you!

There is a saying. Speeach is silver while silence is gold. I don't like noisy surroundings. It is so easy to keep silence anyway.

hi wolfie34!
i sure definitely can sit in a room with no silence at all as long i have something to do. sometimes, silence does something good to me because it keeps me relaxed. haha.
but i also love it when i am doing something and my tv is turned on. i can do multi-tasking anyway. so that will not be a problem with regards to my concentration process.
happy posting and happy mylotting!

I like peace and quiet but there is no getting it while at work. We have a small auto repair shop so there are always are tools going. The air chisel is the worst. I seldom get quiet at the house either. The hubby walks in and turns on the TV immediately. Since we work together I get to listen to the radio in the car. I don't think he can handle silence.
I did once experience true silence. A freind took me to a place out in the middle of no where. No birds, crickets, not a single sound. It was so completely different! I could almost hear our hearts beating. Now, I have to admit, that is just a little too quiet. I like the sound of the birds chirping. I like to hear the fountain running. I like hearing life. If you have never experience such silence you can't imagine the feeling.
So, give me the sounds of nature thriving. You can turn off the TV and radio. Take away the sound pollution. But there is a difference between silence and peace and quiet.

Hey wolfie! I sometimes so want nothing but silence and it
is almost impossible to get! I have noisy azz neighbors who
never shut the freak up and if they aren't yelling or
screaming the tv is blasting till all hours of the night
and their windows are right next to my kitchen/office where
I like to have quiet when I'm mylotting and I can't think
straight. I like to blast my stereo sometimes too, but I
also like complete quiet at times and it seem I never get it.
But, I do have my trusty ear plugs! Unfortunately, they don't
keep out all noise, only 32 decibels and apparently that is
not nearly enough! So I guess unless we can live where there
are no humans and cars and quiet nature we are just plain
screwed!!!

Hi there wolfie
I don't like it when my house is in complete silence as it just seems creepy not that there is much silence to be found in my house with three young boys but I do love to sit on a bench with the sunshine on my face in complete silence but I have yet to find this place!

I also love silence. However, it is so rare that I can only find it in prayers room in some of our catholic parishes here. Whenever I am in turmoil and just want to think and let things be, then I go to those prayer rooms and reflect and sometimes not to reflect and not to think of anything else. I find that there is peace in silence. I think most of us need it and I do savor it.

I completely agree with what you have said. I believe that Silence is Golden, but people nowadays want real gold. Everyday there are sounds of traffic, dogs, etc. etc. So much that you can't even concentrate on your studies.
I can only study in Silence, so I usually study late in the night at about 1 A.M.
And guess what? Even at that time you can hear dogs barking and some really mysterious and creepy sounds. I like silence. Maybe to achieve silence has now become a commercial thing for people as Sony and many other industry giants have developed a headphone that will give you the silence you need.
Cheers!
AJ Rox.

When I am ready to go to sleep, I like total silence and complete darkness.
Unless it's raining ... hearing the rain is soothing. When I go walking, I listen
to nature and get as far away from sound as I can.
I like the silence at times... but then again, when I listen to music and I want volume and a bass thump to it!

I live out in the country, so there really isnt alot of noise. I enjoy the sounds of the crickets, to me, they are part of the silence :) I will save the raid for the earwigs ;)
During the day, i can hear the odd car pass, the sound of a laptop in the distance, and my own computer. In the evening, i hear the crickets.
My tv gos off as soon as my little ones leave for school and silence falls over the inside of my house. My hubby and I talk a bit here and there while we work.
I am not one for noise pollution, it gets me edgy and irritable :(
