I don't know how I got it, because I'm the only one in the house who has it, but sure enough, I got conjuctivitis, more popularly known as pink eye. It's where the eye becomes all red and irritated, sometimes itchy, and painful. It also secretes a lot of goop and when I wake up in the morning I have to pry my eyelids open because they're practically glued shut!!
Now normally this takes a prescribed medicine to get rid of, either a drop or a cream to put in your eye.
I am wondering if anyone has any good home remedies I may try. I'd rather not go to the doctor because I just had to pay $40 yesterday to see my doctor about a different issue, and I was unaware of the pink eye until I woke up this morning.
So, do you have a home remedy to cure pink eye?

Well that sucks! Every time I go to the doctor for something I always end up coming home with something else thanks to sitting in the doctor's office for so long. I bet someone in the waiting room had it and touched a pen or doorknob that you touched and voila - pink eye.
I have 4 kids so I can tell you that I know a little about pink eye. It can either be viral or bacterial.
If it is viral then the symptoms are usually associated with more of a watery discharge that is not green or yellow in color. Often, viral "cold-like" symptoms, such as sinus congestion and runny nose, are also present. The eyelids may be It swollen.
If it is bacterial then the symptoms are usually eye pain, swelling, redness, a moderate amount of discharge - usually green or yellowish and discharge commonly accumulates after sleeping. You will usually awaken with your eyes stuck shut which requires a warm washcloth being applied to the eyes to remove the discharge.
Bacterial pink eye requires antibiotic eyedrops or ointment prescribed by the doctor.
In the past, when the pink eye is not caused by bacterial infection, I have treated my daughter's pink eye with an over the counter medicine called "Similasan's Pink Eye Relief" eye drops. This worked for her some of the times. It is a homeopathic treatment and supposedly the active ingredients in Similasan temporarily relieves minor symptoms associated with viral and environmental conjunctivitis - pink eye. I bought it at Walgreens.
You can get a coupon for Similasan here:

I hope this information helps, and good luck with it. If not, you might try calling your doctor to see if there is any way they can phone in a medicine for you to your pharmacy.

I have 5 kids and we had a very nasty bout of pink eye circulating the house 2 winters ago, even the 5 month old had it. It was so not fun trying to put cream in the baby's eyes. I had saved the medicine and reused it when we all got it again a month or so later, but that medicine is long gone and expired by now.
I did pick up some of that stuff you are talking about when I was at the store today, unfortunatly it sounds like I have the bacterial kind. I will give it a day or 2 to see if it will run it's course or improve with this medicine, then if not I will call my doc and see what they can do. I hate to pay another copay just to get a prescription.

Ooh, that sounds really nasty. I bet you probably have to go to the doctor again to get a prescription for it. I hope you get over it soon and don't pass it to your kids. Good luck.

I never had it but one of my kids did once, it is horrible. I just took him to the doctors and got some cream for it off him. I hope that yours clears up soon xx

I have no home remedy, but I think in your situation I'd get the doctor to treat it to ensure that it clears up as quickly as possible. It's highly infectious, and the last thing you need is for the baby or one of the other kids to pick it up from you.
Good luck, I hope it clears up soon. It sounds horrid.

Kats, I've had pinkeye only once, and this was late in life. I have no idea how I got it because I had not even been out or around anyone having pink eye. I went to the pharmacist and got something to put in my eye. I cannot remember what it was, but I am sure your pharmacist can tell you what to use.
