Do you make a birthday cake at home or order one from the store? I always feel conflicted because I have no experience decorating cakes, but I feel like buying one kind of takes away the personal touch. It seems like it makes the celebration more commercial and less a genuine celebration of love and life. What do you think?

We used to make our own birthday cakes, but with the supermarkets now doing the novelty cakes, they are great fun,you can get the cakes to fit every occasion, from the kiddies cakes to the teenagers cakes to the `adult` cakes, and they are good value too,the average cake is around tenquid,so if you say that you were going to buy ingredients and make it yourself then it would cost you as much.

I do not know how to bake so I order cakes from the store. For big events like the 1st birthday of my daughter, I will probably have a themed cake made by a cake supplier here. Also, there is a popular brand in the Philippines that allows the buyer to buy a plain cake and then she can choose the ready-made decors and decorate the cake herself. So, it's bought from the store but it's also somewhat personalized.
