The safe harbor law designed to keep new born infants from being tossed into dumpsters is now protecting older children.

The latest and most bazaar case involves nine siblings dumped by their father for reasons unknown. This sad cluster involved five boys and four girls. The kids appeared to be unhurt. Some were sent to foster care, the older ones were sent to emergency shelters. The government hopes to keep them together to minimize the trauma.

Sadly, I don't think this is going to be the last abandonment of children at hospital's doorsteps. The economy and other pressures are leaving parents more vulnerable to desperation as jobs and homes are lost. American families are more fractured than in the 1930's depression era so there isn't that support either.

I don't care how bad the economy got or how my jobs my husband and I lost, I would never just dump my kids. We are a family and that means we stick together no matter what...no matter how hard and bumpy a road we are on. It is truly sad the way parents discard their children like they are nothing but rubbish. Whenever I hear a story like this I always wonder...well, why did you have them then? Yes, I am aware accidents happen and sometimes an unplanned child is born, but like in the case above you are talking about 9 children!! These parents didn't have 9 mistakes! I truly don't think there is any good reason on this earth for that. If you find you can not care for your children, there are agencies that can help you. If you can't find one then at the very least don't dump your kids in the trash, drop them off at a local church, police station or some sort of place where you know once your kids are found they will be taken to the correct authorities.

Or it could be the act of someone who just didn't feel like being a parent anymore, especially to nine children.

That is certainly possible in this day and age of family breakdown.
