I am really worried about Nicaragua today. I am not sure what to do.

We woke up to the news that Ortega, the Marxist former dictator of Nicaragua has been elected president after being overthrown about 16 years ago. I am worried that this puts us in a precarious position in this country since I am from the U.S. but my husband is from Nicaragua. It would be difficult to pull up stakes and leave here because we own properties here. I saw that more of the people voting for him were very young and have no memories of what happened before. Some of the polls opened late and closed early and many people didn't get to vote. Those that did stood for hours in long lines. The runner-up says there will be a run-off election while Ortega followers say it is a done deal. Anyone have any suggestions?

Better wait and see because this man has to adopt a new policy according to the world change. He has to adjust his thoughts and ideas. Be optimistic. But what you said about the elections, i think this is a bad start for him and for the country.

I am trying to be optimistic. He said over and over that he is a changed man and I guess that the people believe him. He says he is looking out for the poor and there are plenty of them. But when he was in power before he would take other peoples property and give it to one of his supporters. I worked hard for what I have and I want to keep it.

One of the things I feared is already starting and he hasn't even taken office yet. People are starting to take illegal possession of properties. That is one of the things he encouraged when he was in office before. In fact, he gave people other people's property. That sounds great if it isn't your property he is giving away. I hope he doesn't allow this thing to go on but I fear that he will. I guess I will just have to hope and pray for the best.

I love your avatar. It is so neat. Thank you for the well wishes. I just hope everythings stays peaceful here. These people are known for not holding back with their heated opinions. So if everythings stays peaceful as it has been the past year and a half that I have been here, I will be happy. It is a beautiful tropical country and I love living here.

I well remember reading about all the problems when he was President before. This is not good for the country at all, and although the younger ones have no personal memories of what happened, I am sure they would know from their families.
Sadly, however I suspect that they have been taken in by the promises that have been made, but they shall learn that it is one thing to believe a promise but another for it to actually happen. Regarding the properties they give away, the same thing will happen in Nicaragua as it did in Zimbwabe where they took the land from the whites and gave it to the former native soldiers, who had no idea how to farm.
My sympathies to the landowners now who potentially might lose their property, as it will be a worrying time for you. However, if necessary get out of the country and risk losing the property rather than losing your life.

My thoughts exactly! He has made them a lot of promises that I am not at all sure he can fulfill. This country is so very poor and the electricity averages being off about 4 hours a day because they can't afford to buy the petroleum to keep it going. They have no geothermal power plants which would be great here with all the volcanos there are around here. But on a positive note Ortega is friends with Chavez in Venezuela. Maybe he will sell his oil at cheaper prices

I don't think he has changed as much as he would like everyone to think. Everyone does change and life seems to have a way to make us mellow out more. I honestly think this is very bad for you and your country. Even if HE has changed the world leaders will never allow him to show his changes. He has left a bad taste in the mouth of many countries from many years ago and he is hooking up with some of the not so good leaders of today. It is like he changed but kept the same bad friends, who actually became worse over the years. The world is not good for any country right now so it is best for a new leader to tread cautiously and always watch behind himself. Oretega may be led by the wrong people, example Chavez, he is not liked by the world powers or the United Nations, Hussein which is Ortega's friend will not last long enough to help or hurt him. In the end Ortega will go back to being a thug in order to survive in this horrible world!
