Should similar discussions be deleted?

Im bringing this up because it happened to me and I know there is a a rule that you cannot have similar discussion or they will be deleted but that is also why I wanted to discuss it. Do you think it adds to the quality of Mylot or take away from it? I have responded to discussion time and time again that were the same as others Ive previously responded. Can it really be avoided and I think these similar discussions actually give you something to respond to when you ran out interesting topics. In Conversation, topics always occur repeatedly in day to day life and I do not find it annoying because theres always something new occuring that gives you something new to add to a topic. Even so, what about the number of interests in Mylot to contribute to the 200K members--so yes, we have similar discussion on here but they probably touch only a small amount of people at a time, you know? And yet, I still do not know the answer to this and still will side with Mylots wise judgement on this one because I love it too much. Happy Mylotting.

hi! having similar post i think is inevitable, we couldn't avoid it, as such some of the members is tired searching for similar post, what goes on their head, they post it right away. some of them didn't really mean to have the same post., they just enjoy making discussion. If deleting the same post should be observed well, i think there would be a great changes, i guess, some of mylotting members would probably withdraw their account in here.

there is so many factors in limiting a topic to one discussion, like talking about the debate could change entirely in nature overnight just like the BAILOUT which is literally changing day to day

I know that it is really bothering you if there are many similar discussions in the same time, I feel the same way too. But if you delete all similar discussions, I am afraid that many people should lost their post counts at once, so that I think it is up to people whether they want to response those questions or not.

The guideline really isn't that specific about this. We aren't supposed to copy another users discussion and we should search to make sure what we want to discuss hasn't been done in that exact form already BUT...it says nothing about the same topic with our own spin nor does it take into consideration that the search function does not really work all that well. Things shouldn't be deleted for no good reason. I have seen similar discussions to this one also but it doesn't take away from the importance of the topic.

I have been here almost a year. Is it possible that I may have had a similar topic to someone here longer than me? Yes. Is it possible that someone may have a similar topic to one I posted months ago? Yep, you betcha. There are over 145,000 people in the mylot population. I think it would take up more time trying to find and avoid similar discussions. It happens to us all. We all have to deal. And find new discussions that will stimulate a conversation. I figure as long as I am not intentionally hurtful or rude it works. Chalk it up to great minds think alike!

It's really hard not to start a discussion that has already been covered. I used to search for the discussion subject, find no results so I'd start a discussion and when I posted it similar discussions would come up. They hadn't come up when I searched, so how was I supposed to know it had already been covered? The guidelines do say not to start a discussion that has already been covered, but how can you know if search doesn't find it, and how can they say it should be deleted?

No I don't they should be deleted.. Though I think they should delete old topics.. Because if you don't allow double topics, then soon there will be nothing more to be talked about.. Have a nice day..

That wouldn't work because if your topic is deleted, you and everyone who posted on it loses money.

If every similar discussion was deleted, then there would not be as many discussions and it would take much longer to reach the minimum payment. We cannot copy someone else's discussion, that is for sure, but that does not mean that we can ask the discussion in a different way or from a different angle. I should say no because we all have different friends and we all have a different perspective about it. And it would limit each one too much. I find that sometimes I want to find an answer to something at a particular time that it bothers me yet a month ago, I could not care less.

According to my opinion similar discussions should not be deleted. The reason is, the number of MyLot members is increasing day by day and the figure has reached to 145,542 till now, so there would certainly be hundreds of people thinking about a same topic to discuss at the same time. So there would be a large number of discussions to be deleted almost every day. If MyLot deletes all these discussions, this is would indeed result in lack of good and interesting discussions. I fully agree with your point that : "these similar discussions actually give you something to respond to when you ran out of interesting topics". In fact my discussion was also deleted a couple of days ago... :(

It should be deleted, no doubt if it is the EXACT same discussion worded the same as the previous one.. Yes, it needs to go then.. But, if it is another user who wrote the same discussion without realizing it, then that would be a different story.. You can tell if someone purposely wrote an discussion just to make trouble.

thats true, I think that is the nuisance and similar discussions and word for word discussions (or at least same slant) get put into the same category where they should not but maybe that would take a whole new staff

I half agree with this rule. I do believe that in most cases, similar discussions that are statrted close together should be deleted. However, discussions that are similar to ones started months ago should be allowed. It gives new members a chance to contribute and get a different perspective. I also think with so many people posting, it is inevitable to get a few repeat posts. I think as long as they are at least two weeks apart, and the previous one is not in the first few pages of the top discussions, then it should be allowed. Also, if it is a major event like a news item or something, it should be allowed. If it is a normal happening though, like Christmas or something, I think only a few discussions like that should happen, especially on a site like this with regard to religious holidays. I believe that non-christians should not have to see stuff about christian holidays and stuff plastered all over mylot. I do think that more of them should post about their beliefs, mainly for a little flavor and because I would find it interesting to learn about others. I don't mean to pick on Christians. THat is certainly not my intention, but around christmas time, that is about all I ever see. What do you want for Christmas, do you spend Christmas with your family, other random stuff like that. Even half the discussions I see on that are misguided, centered around gifts and the like rather than family and friends. Anyway, there's my answer. Similar discussions that are more tahn two weeks apart or that are about some one time current event or something should not be deleted, but multiple duplicate posts or ones that are closer together should be.

I don't think they should delete similar discussions. Not everyone can reach a discussion, so some people won't have to answer that discussion again. But if you come across similar discussions, you can just leave it and not answer it, or you could answer it again, it's your choice anyway.
