Newbies, tutorials and mentors

I think that it is about time that mylot introduces a system where mylot newbies are under the guidance of mentors who help them to go about the site. What can be posted what not. What behaviour is accepted in here and what is not. Do you agree with a mentor scheme? Can it be worked out?

I am always happy to answer questions and explain things to newbies, but really all they need to do is to read the guidelines from the link at the bottom of each page. Mylot guidelines tell you what to do and what not to do. There are also some excellent FAQs, and more details about earnings, which are easily found from the links below. If people don't understand, then I don't mind helping, but it is so obvious that many newbies simply have not read any of the terms or guidelines and then they don't know why their earnings and post numbers have decreased.

If you were referred by someone, hopefully he/she would be willing to explain things. I know that the person who referred me did that. She either answered my questions or pointed me to the proper place to make my own discoveries. I don't know many sites where they assign mentors. I think they believe that members will help each other. That's what we should be doing, and without being mean or rude about it. And, I think, without reporting someone who doesn't seem to understand. I've never understood the attitude that some have here about being superior to others merely because they have high numbers beside their names. Those numbers mean that they've been here longer, that's all. It doesn't make them gods.

What would be nice would be a list of newbies and the ability to say howdy to them and offer help if needed.

This is a good idea, newbies really need some attention from seniors and fellow mylotters i think this can only help them from spamming ( like posting referral links etc ) and posting one liner through which they are not at all going to earn a penny here and few such things which can help them to improve their earning can also be taught to them, i take efforts and teach people who really need help from me .

Hi Ronaldino, I was a newbie myself when I began and no-one mentored me, I just got on with it and learnt as I went along and also read the guidelines which is what a lot of people don't do. What about their inital sponsor showing them the ropes, isn't that how it should work. Ellie :D

I was a newbie myself when I began ellie, I am sorry, but, will you be terribly mad at me if I laugh at this? We are all newbies when we first begin here, yes? bo blows ellie a kiss and smiles, then scoots out of the room, quickly

I think it's a wonderful idea and since I'm one of the people that is doing a lot of hand-holding, I've often thought about asking myLot to be put on the payroll or get some other sort of bennie for it. I'm glad to do it, but sometimes I feel like I'm more than just a mentor here, and I'm sure not making any more from it because my earnings will go down as posts are deleted just like everyone else.

A post of mine has been just deleted despite receiving a lot of response. I still have not figured how I have broken the guidelines.

Hi ronaldinu, Yes it would be nice if they would do that, but they won't. I do find that alot of us mylotters take it upon ourselves to show newbies the ropes so to speak. I know for a fact that there are certain mylotters who go out of their way to help newbies out but, unfortuately alot of them do not listen and end up doing what they want and getting themselves in trouble. I know that if I can help someone that is new I try my best to do so. I know that when I was new there were alot of mylotters that stepped in to help me out and they are now my friends and I was quite happy for their help.

Hi ronald-YES I think that is a grat idea!! It is about time something was done like that as so many newbies get confused as to what they can write etc and why they lose points which also annoys us regulars but we are used to it...so yes for the newbies to be shown around the site would be a good idea...hopefully it could be worked out..but has it been suggested before?? littleowl

I think that is a good idea my friend since there are always new people joining mylot and I am sure that some of them have trouble figuring out the guidelines and everything else you need to know,I remember when I started here about five or so months ago it took me a while to get used to everything, and I think mentors should help newbies to realize what they can post about, and explain to them everything so they do not break the guidelines and get punished for it.

i think it would be a good idea but i cant picture it happening and working correctly.. people might hear they have to go through it and not even join mylot.. but there should be a way of people having to check off each rule in the tos as they read it or something.. something has to be done with all the problems there have been!!

Hi ronaldinu, That is a good idea but I don't think it will work as all the guidelines are all there for them and new users should study them. Tamara

I think they are already doing that...except they let us volunteer!!! I clearly remember my first couple of weeks. It was so confusing. I knew I was looking at everything I needed but didn't know how to use it. I had soooo much fun with the discussions, I got caught up in them. Around day 3 I saw a discussion on why don't newbies read the guidelines & my first thought was "what guidelines???" So I took the next day & started exploring what all the tabs were at the top of the page. Oops, I found the guidelines. So I spent the rest of the day exploring myLot. Then during the course of a discussion, I'd pick up little hints telling me when there was a certain milestone to look forward to. I found if I asked questions NO ONE would answer them. Actually, I did find a few friends who would answer in PMs. So, now I have taken upon myself to find the newbies & do my best to guide them through their journey. I wake up early in the morning & my first task is to respond to atleast one (maybe more) "No Response" discussions. I also go to the "New User Tab" & try & respond to one or more discussions. I ran into a discussion of someone fairly new asking several questions & asking ALL the newbies to come to his discussion to learn. I gave as complete response as possible & ended with showing the guidelines....so anybody who came to his discussion has NO reason to not read them. Several said thank you. I find it fairly easy to tell the newbies who truly want to learn & those who don't care & just want the money. I will spend ALL day with those trying to learn!!! I said ALL that to simply say I believe myLot expects the more savvy members to teach the newbies. PLUS, we all remember better if we make the mistake ourselves!!!

Yes that would be a good idea :D I would love to do that too.. But when can you be a mentor ? After a certain amount of time ? And will you earn a bit by it ? For example if the student hits 100posts, get $0.10 or so ?? Have a nice day..

Well, this mentoring scheme may not work so good. Let me explain why. Even at this stage of myLot, everyone on the site can find out what is allowed and what's not, by reading the myLot guidelines, which, in my opinion, are pretty comprehensive. Even so, some newbies don't even read the guidelines or they read it but don't care much about it. What makes you think that new members will obey what mentors would tell them if they don't care so much about the guidelines. I'm not saying it won't help, but I don't think it will have a profound impact. What it could be done, in my opinion, is to have somebody "hunting" for discussions that are against the guidelines, delete them, but also send a message to the ones that have posted that response/discussion/comment explaining why it was deleted. That way the members that make such mistakes will eventually learn what they are doing wrong and stop doing it if bad posts are ruthlessly deleted.

Hi ronald, that is a great idea but you know we can really do that here but a newbie must ask a question..I did that when I started and after I read the rules, I still have inquiry which I want to be answered, so, what I did it to pm a anyone here whom I believed was a member for a year or so and she replied me with all my questions.. Some newbie don't spend time reading the guidelines or they are still but they don't get it all and it is better to ask rather than assume!

I think that the mentor idea is great and would help alot! It may not be a perfect system but none ever are and it could save alot of headaches with the newcomers that are having troubles finding there way around the site. I am still learning and always appreciate added advice on this site. Maybe send an e-mail to the site admin and suggest it? Not sure if they would answer or not as I have never e-mailed them an idea. But it is worth trying.

Granted a good idea, but maybe impossible in reality,I mean who is going to post away while a mentor works along with them, maybe especially when this is meant to be a site that is fun to be a part of and to post in,OK there are rules broken and guidelines are not followed ,but im sure that many pick it all up soon enough.

That's a good idea here, at the same time we can build a good relationship here. teaching newbies can help them to post good discussions, helps to incresae mylot reputation and it helps to earn lots of few cents here coz when iwas a newbie here i struggled and i don't know what to do properly so it's realyl good idea. Happy posting.
