I love Camping. I'll never forget the time, As I was paying the guy in the rather ramshackle office I realised that the photo's on the wall were of a gigantic alligator being chased, cornered and eventually carted away from the campground itself... I did not sleep much that night. The other 'good' story involves the knock-down, blood-spilling and nose-breaking fist fight myself and my best buddy got into at three am in a tiny tent on the edge of a ravine halfway up the tallest mountain in Ireland..but that is too long a story to go into here.

I love to go camping, but I haven't gotten to do it much in recent years. Things have just been too hectic, and money has been too tight. I just acquired a used pop-up camper in the last few weeks, though, so hopefully I will be able to change that soon. I think my best camping trip was when I was a kid growing up in Georgia. I was in the Boy Scouts, so we went camping a lot, but the trip that was the most fun was the trip we took to Cumberland Island. Cumberland Island is an island off the coast of St. Mary's, Georgia. The island is in the Intra-Coastal Waterway, not too far from King's Bay Naval Base. I haven't been there since our trip, but at the time, the only way to get to the island was to park your vehicle in St. Mary's and take a ferry boat over to the island. There was only one vehicle on the island...a truck at the Ranger's station, and it was only used when necessary. This island is probably the closest thing I have ever seen to what it would have looked like when the early settlers came over in the colonial days of our country. It was AWESOME! There was running water on the island, but only at central locations near groups of campsites. We had to carry our water back to our campsites, and were advised by the park rangers there to purify the water before drinking it. We packed everything we needed for a 3-day trip, drove down to St. Mary's, and took the ferry over to the island. After checking in at the office on the island, we filled our canteens, and started our hike out to our campsite. I am not sure how far the hike was, but after getting up early, packing the trucks, and driving to St.Mary's, and taking the boat trip over...it seemed like it took forever to reach the camp. We spent the whole weekend hiking and exploring the island. There were wild horses on the island, so we spent some time watching them. They were beautiful. We spent time exploring some of the sea life we found along the beach. There were times when we had the entire beach near our camp to ourselves. The only real problem we had was with bugs and mosquitoes. We had repellent, so it was manageable. It rained for a little while every day we were there, but it was the type of rain that was refreshing. We stowed our gear in our tents, so we were prepared for the rain. We went swimming, and some people even brought along fishing gear, but they didn't have any luck. I spent my down-time lounging in the water. It was nice. I almost didn't want to leave, but it was nice to get back to civilization again too. The hike out was not nearly as hard and going in. Our packs were lighter, and we were all thinking about getting back and hitting a restaurant for a real meal. We further lightened our loads by giving unused supplies to other campers who were just arriving. Our original plan was to take the last ferry of the day off the island, but we actually arrived back at the station early enough to take the earlier ferry back to St. Mary's. I remember going to Hardees while we were traveling home. I think that was probably one of the best burgers and cokes I have ever had. I guess it was because all we had eaten in the last few days was stuff like Ramen noodles or other foods that were easy to prepare in camp. I remember everyone eating really slowly as we sat there. We had other good camping trips, but I think this one was the one I enjoyed the most. I would like to go back there for a few days. I may try to take the trip in a couple of years...

i, i love camping aswell and one of my mates funny stories, well she is my ex now allways laffs at me,she had took our kid to the campsite wash blocks and i was boiling water inside a small two man tent,ya know a triangle type one before the dome tents came out, anyway whilst the brew was boiling i decided to change my gas cartridge on my spare gas cooker so i pushed it on and pierced the canister and then started struggling to get both metal clips around the bottom to hold the gas can in place.the next thing i know is im sat on a field within 1/2 of second i was in a tent then im on a field with kerry(my ex) and son walking up to me in shock then they just started laffing there heads off bringing attention to all the other campers.i was red from the instant explosion and from embarrisment.the tent dissapeared in a flash and the explosion was quite, fast and felt like ide caught the sun.it was funny now i look back on it cos one miniute im in totall privacy and the next im sat in a wide open space on the tents ground sheet,i acted normall and made my cup of morning tea.it was that stove wich sparked the other canister off.ahah.what a dim wit i was.

I love camping!! But a couple times we camped in the National Forest which is "camp at your own risk". So when I heard coyotes howling literally at the top of the hill directly above our camper and heard them rustling in the leaves, with my 8 month old sleeping in it, I was terrified. So scared that my stomach dropped and I got sick. Then one thing led to another and I got freaked out about mountain lions and bears and everything else.

I do love camping! That's great enjoyment! Especially when I can see the sunrise lying in the camp...A little lazy, but another kind of relaxation.

Hmmm. Not sure I have a good story. I've only been camping once, but I loved it. My (then) husband and I and my sister (who was about 8 or 9) went tent camping - through Michigan, Ohio, Pennsylvania, New York, Canada, and back to Michigan. We were gone for between 2 & 3 weeks. My sister ended up sleeping in the back of our pick-up truck, because she wasn't so sure about tent camping. At one camp site, we pitched our tent on a ledge real near a river. And as we listened to the sound of the rushing water, I realized it was making me....well, need a pit stop. Hubby walked with me all the way across the camp site to the latrine (of course as a woman I couldn't relieve myself out in the open). We got back and got settled, and before I could get to sleep, that rushing water made me want to have another pit stop. That time, my hubby handed me the flashlight and said, "Have fun." Hmmph. We'd been married less than a year. Shouldn't he have been a little more understand?

My family and I used to go camping all the time. It just seems like so much work. The last time Me and mt daughter went camping, it was with girl scouts. It was about 35 or 40 deg. out side. We slept in tents, and about froze. I think that done me in. I don't care if I never see another tent.
