I have wanted a tattoo for years. Are there any tips that you can give me in regards to what to expect and how to choose where to have one put? Also how did you choose your first tattoo...

They have lots of books when you go in to get a tattoo that is hwo I decided what I wanted. I looked trhough all the books and pciked the one I wanted and the person had it on there back so I had mine on my back to and then I wanted anotehr one and wanted it on my back to. I want to get more cause I love my tattoos. You can ask the guy who does it to where he suggests you to get the tattoo they are used to people not sure for the firt time where it would look nice. but no matter where you get it they are nice and if you want one you will be happy with whre you want to put it. If you want otehr people to see it all the tiem have it where they will see it all the time and if you want it to only be seen sometimes then do that.

Thanks for the advice. I have seen some awesome pics on the internet that i like but do not know how they would look on the body. I know I want something pretty and colorful. Nothing trashy looking.

first and foremost, make sure its something you can live with til the day you, well, die. Tattoos hurt less if they are placed in an area with more fatty tissue, such as the upper b**b, your bum cheaks, outer bicept etc. 3 of hte most painful places to get a tattoo (personal areas aside) is the shoulder blade, the ankle and the hip. I personally think a nice tattoo on the center of the center area of the calf looks good. There are some tender areas while getting the tattoo but not so bad, as there is alot of extra tissue and not so much skin and bone. The important thing is also, rationalize to yourself why you want the tattoo..and, if you can live with that answer, then all the power to ya woman:)

I think the foreign writing and native idea is neat as well. My sister has all our immediate family's names done that way for her tattoos. She said that now she needs to add 2 more. One for my name and anothr for my daughtes...lol

not a problem doll...haha wish someone had told me in the beginning ;) If i could start all over again with my tats, i would do something more symbolic..celtic or native, something with alot of meaning behind it, something that as you said, reflects ones self. The other thing i think is neat and quite tasteful is having your name, or saying, done in chinese characters (scripted)

Take your time with your tattoos. Slowly choose a design first, and if you want to create your own design.. That's great!! go ahead! Then the next step is to slowly research and choose the tattoo artist you want to do your tattoo. Talk to them about your design and what you want. Then once you're confident with the tattoo artist and the tattoo design (the tattoo artist can make your design nicer if you want as well or give you ideas) and then set the appointment. When you get to that date, take a shower, make sure you're clean, and wear something comfortable. Also, if you are putting a tattoo on your legs or shoulder, wear a shorts or a spaghetti strap (if you can get a tube,it's better) so you don't need to take out so many clothes so it's easier. (Also after the tattoo, you won't get too much direct contact on it. Then.. when you're in the tattoo parlor... RELAX!!! let him do everything.. talk to him or talk to someone while doing the tattoo. Just relax.. it's not painful.. Mine felt like a massage.. I almost fell asleep.. Once the tattoo is done, the tattoo artist would clean it and let you see it and.. wallaah!! you have a tattoo.. they'll prolly cling wrap it (that's why the shorts or the spaghetti strap or tube.. :) ) then when you go home, just put the ointment they gave you.. and take the cling wrap out before you go to sleep.. And during the weeks after the tattoo.. just apply the ointment, don't expose the tattoo to sun that much.. and make sure NOT to scratch it when the skin is peeling!! And after a month or so.. you're good to go.. :) The place of the tattoo is up to you, sure, it depends on the size.. but it is all up to you!!Mine is on the back shoulder to the left. :) I chose my first tattoo by just browsing the book, cause I really want one.. hahah.. but I never regret it. I put in a tribal sun.. and I love it!! Because I love the sun.. :) I wish you all the best with your tattoo!!

Location If you work out of the home, will you need to be able to cover this tattoo with clothing if need be? Or do you want to show it off to everyone? My first tattoo, and all of them since then are custom art designs. I have the one and only tattoo like it. They are tattoos i will cherish forever, and fit my lifestyle perfectly. I personally do not like flash (the pictures in the books others were refering to) done tattoos, I like being more original myself. Have a great day! Nocturnica

I think that a tatto can rflect what type of person one is. The originality shows alot of things in regards to a persons personality. I agree that the book ones are not really what I am looking for, Would like to design one of my own but am not the artsy type.

I agree that a tattoo can reflect something about you as a person. All of my tattoos are MY tattoos, they are draw special for me to reflect what i wanted to have for my own tattoo. For me, there is something about having a tattoo that is personal. It is going to be on my body FOREVER, so it needs to be something I am going to enjoy FOREVER! Artsy? You don't have to be an artist to have a custom designed tattoo. When you have decided on something you'd like to have, something that fits well with you, visit with some of your local tattoo artist and shops and take a look at their custom work. You can select the artist you like and ask for a custom design of your own, tell him a little about what you are thinking, and let him draw something up for you. Keeping in mind, the tattoo artist will know best what will work on a tattoo, and what will not work. For instance, a lot detail is great when drawing on paper, not so great in a tattoo. Over the years the lines seem to blend together and too much detail becomes an ugly sploch of ink on your skin, which you will not be happy with. NEVER allow someone to tattoo something on you, if you are not 1000% sure it is exactly what you want to have FOREVER. If something is not right when you look at the drawing, ask the artist if it can be changed. I got my first tattoo, 10 years ago. And I am still in love with it every time I see it! When getting a tattoo, it really needs to be something you are going to look at 10, 15 or 20 years from now, and still love it like you did the day you got it!

Choosing your first tattoo is pretty hard, but I think the most important thing is that it comes from an organic place. I wouldn't recommend finding your first in a book or using a pre-designed tribal. Just in case it hurts so bad you never want to go back at least the image you have forever is meaningful and personal. I worked in a tattoo shop for a couple years and the best advice I can give is to be patient and the right design will come. Then keep the design and pick out a place, think on it for a while. I personally wait a year between tattoos or I would be absolutely covered (I'm only 18!) If in a year you still think about the same picture in the same place in your body you're almost guaranteed to never regret it. Knowing it's something you truly truly want is what makes the pain and money worth while.

They will show you some books. You will have to choose among them.If you want your own design take a photograph or printout of that design. You can even get a face(some one you love or admire)done as tattoo.I prefer biceps and back of the nec. Most ladies get it done on their neck or ankle.

There are a few things to consider about the location about the tat. First, if you have a professional job and you want to keep it somewhat hidden, don't put it in the most visible place. Second, if you want minimal pain, get it in an area that has more muscle or fat than just bone. For me, the outline was the worst part. As the guy filled it in with the color it didn't hurt that much. I wanted some kind of tribal sun. I didn't go in to the shop with a design...I just looked through their books and found a really cool one. It's on my back. I actually want another one!
