How to be a good director?

guys ... as long as i can remember.. i have wanted to direct a movie.. i see those gr8 masters of direction and wonder whether one day i will be remembered like them... i have tried directing some short films with my handy cam but nothing seems to work my style out.. i am a man of sci fi movies and fantasies .. can anyone suggest how i can work out something with my handy cam...
