Household Tips...

I have some household tips to share with you. They work and have been very helpful for me so, I thought I would share them with you and hopefully they will make things a little easier for you in the future too. 1. I got a couple of mosquito bites over a period of like 3 days and, after a night where one on my ankle kept me up all night one night, I looked online to see if anyone had any suggestions for things I could use around my house to stop the itch. The first tip I read, I tried on a bite that had just started itching on my wrist. It worked like a charm. Just moisten the bite and pour a little bit of salt on it and wah-la! No more itch. Not even at all. It literally never itched again and it was a mosquito bite that I had only just gotten the night before. It literally had only just started itching for the first time when I used the salt tip and, it never itched again and was gone in about a day and a half. 2. If you have burnt on food on a pot or pan, fill it with water and put a fabric softener sheet in the water and soap it overnight or for a few hours. Then toss the fabric softener sheet, pour the water out and wash the pot or pan like you would normally. The burnt, crusty food should come right off. I have done this a couple times and it really does work. 3. If you want to hang a picture and the nail is small and you don't want to hit your thumb and index finger with the hammer, wedge the nail into the teeth of a comb and hold the comb flat to the wall and hammer away. I am certain there are more that I simply can't think of right now but, those are the three that came to mind and, they are very helpful. Have you tried any of these three things? If so, did they work for you? Have you heard of these tips before? Do you have some of your own to share?

I have also found that baking soda is good at getting baked-on & cooked-on stuff off of cookware also. From experience, however, the inside of your shiny pot usually ends up dull afterwards. I also heard somewhere that a woman who's dinner caught fire poured baking soda into the pot to extinguish the fire, & when she washed it out, all the burnt-on crud came off easily. If possible, when pulling frozen food out of the freezer to defrost, it is always best to pull it out of the freezer earlier & leave it in the refrigerator. It is safer in that it is a lot less likely to spoil, & it also makes things easier on the refrigerator in that the frozen piece will help keep the refrigerator cool. Oh - yeah - never run hot water, especially on frozen meats, to defrost it. It would probably end up spoiling. I also fill up a gallon container of cold tap water & leave that in the refrigerator. Instead of having to run the water cold for that glass of water, I just pour that water from the refrigerator into a glass to drink. For me, it also tastes better from the refrigerator.

I might have to try that idea with the baking soda. Thank you. And, I always pull my meat out of the freezer the day or 2 before I need it and let it defrost in the fridge. On rare occasions, I will forget to pull the meat out in time and I will have to put it in the sink to defrost it through the day but, that is really a rare occasion. My refrigerator has a built in water dispenser and filter but, that is a good idea too. Thank you for your tips!

Hello littleowl! Thank you! I hope they prove useful for you and, even though mosquito season is likely winding down, it can still be used next season. If you think of any tips to share, please come back! I'd love to hear them!

Hi Cort, These are great tips. One thing I learned about any bite or plain itch is to apply a hot cloth to the itchy spot until the heat cools. If needed reheat the cloth and do it again. I t usually only takes one time for me. You can do this if you don't have any salt handy. I'm going to copy these hints down and keep them handy. I have a notebook that I keep things like this in. I'll have to get it sometime and share some hints with you and other friends here. The comb one is really smart. leenie PS Did you see the amazing race last night? Were you surprised that the older couple were the first to go?

Hey Leenie! Thank you! And thank you for your tip too. I will keep that in mind for any time I am out and running around or something and don't have salt handy. And, I look forward to you sharing other tips with me. I did watch The Amazing Race. I started a discussion about it too. I wasn't entirely surprised that the hippie couple went home. I did think they had a good chance at first based solely on how physical their job is but, once they were eliminated, I wasn't too shocked. Were you shocked?

Well now that you aren't doing your star reporter gig you have found a new report to do and I like it! Those were all very interesting and useful tips, all that will come in handy for me to use at least! I really appreciate the alot! I am always getting bitten and ending up scratching my skin off and not being able to sleep and I never heard of the salt thing. I have heard toothpaste and other stuff that never worked for me so I will give that one a try, but hopefully not this season. I like the comb thing since I am always hammering my finger too! The fabric sheet sounds cool too! I always am burning my pots and pans, no surprise there! So thanks for the wonderful tips my brain twin! Been really missing you! Love, your braint twin Opal

Hey Brain Twin! I am glad I could be helpful. I hope they all work as well for you as they have for me. Check this link out: http://www.home-remedy.org/home-remedies-for-mosquito-bites.html That's where I found the mosquito bite thing and, the toothpaste trick was one of them but, since the salt tip was the first one, I figured it must be the best so, I gave it a shot and it worked better than like a charm. LOL! And, why is it that mosquito bites seem to want to itch more at night when you are trying to sleep than any other time during the day? LOL! Ugh! That was infuriating. LOL! I haven't tried the nail tip yet but, it sounds like it will work and, I hope it saves your thumbs. LOL! I was really happy when the fabric softener thing worked. I don't usually burn stuff on my pots and pans but, when I do, I do it like it is my job. LOL! So, it is nice to have something that works so well, with basically no effort. Good luck with these tips! And, I have missed you too! I am reporting on Survivor and The Amazing Race now too. Love and hugs, Cortjo

Thank You so much, these are all real good and most times we just never think to try any of this stuff, and I often wonder who thought of it in the first place. I am going to try the salt remedy. Thanks so much.

My pleasure Grandmaof. I wonder who came up with them too. What makes a person think that salt will stop a mosquito bite? Or that fabric softener sheets soaked in water will break apart burnt on food? The nail one seems a little more obvious but, not the other two. I hope that the salt works for you too. If I had known it would work on my ankle that one night I would have gotten enough sleep. LOL! Now I know though and that will prevent mosquito bite induced sleep issues in the future. LOL!

Ooooo, I love sharing tips! I haven't tried the mosquito thing yet, I'll file that in my mental rolodex. I've heard of the burn food trick with a fabric softener sheet, never had to use it though. The comb trick sounds cool, I'll look for some tiny nails. I do have one to add, if you have a broken light bulb and don't want to risk cutting your hand trying to get it out then take a potato and press it up against the cut glass and then twist the bulb out. Not sure if you'll ever need to use it but you never know.

I hope the salt thing works for you if you ever need to use it. Thank you for your tip. I have heard of that one too but, never have had to use it. Hopefully I never have to. LOL! But, thank you for reminding me of it.
