Yesterday was laundry day. Now, for the past few days, I've been seeing flies. This is nothing new for this time of year. For some reason, when the weather starts to cool down, the bugs and rodents come in. So, I've been noticing the flies. I bought some fly strips and to my dismay, the one in the kitchen was full within two days. I noticed it, but I didn't process it.
So, yesterday, I went to the basement to do laundry. When I opened the basement door, I noticed an odor. It grew stronger as I walked down the steps. I put the first load into the wash and started sniffing around. The odor was strongest by the heating duct, but I couldn't get to the duct. When my husband got home, I told him what I was smelling and asked him to see what he could see. He opened the heating duct and there was a dead racoon, stinkng to high heaven and covered with flies. I was sooooo grossed out, still am. Mark put it in a bag and threw it out, but the dead racoon flesh is in my heating ducts and the flies have been released and are looking for a place to roost.
Now, I have to hire someone to clean the ducts and I should get an exterminator and I'm just totally grossed out.
So, has anyone ever found anything dead in your house? What did you do and how did you react??

Take the cats and dogs (if you have them) or all your house pets outside for a few hours. You could Kennel them temporarily in their carriers/cages.
Then spray some KONK 409 into the heating duct and turn the fans on to circulate it. You can also spray each room, paying special attention to the corners, but don't overdo it. Read the can.
It works instantly and disperses quickly so you can re-enter the house an hour or so later.
You can buy this at your local Co-Op store. Maybe the hardware store would carry it, too. I dunno.
That is so grossss! I feel so sorry for you.
Afterwards, I would also either spray the house with Lysol or buy a Febreeze Air Freshener Candle to burn or something similar.
This is the same stuff that the exterminator will use, but will cost you MUCH LESS.

Oh, I've got the febreeze and I sprayed the air filter with lysol before putting it back. We know an exterminator and a duct cleaning service that would do it for cheap or bartering. It helps to have a contractor in the family. LOL. I'm still grossed out, though. And whether I can smell it upstairs doesn't matter, I think I can and that matters. LOL
