How come the fly in "The Fly" movies never.... 'flies'??

I'm referring to the most recent ones, "The Fly" (1986) and "The Fly II" (1989)... in both films, the creature in question never actually "flies"... I can understand Seth Brundle not being fully grown in the first, but Martin in the second one was growing for years, since birth! he should have developed wings by then, right?
