When you were a kid, did you ever get any help doing your homework?

My nephew came over last sunday to ask help with his homework. Which was quite ok with me, coz it was fairly easy and my mom was also helping out with the answers. I was helping with the drawings coz my nephew didnt draw that well. As we got busy helping him out, i got to thinkin, Hey, I never asked for help with my homework when i was a kid! My da was quite strict with me and whenever i'd ask for help with my homework or project he'd always say, "You do that yourself, you teacher did not call me to do that," or "So, will your teacher be asking ME questions about that homework or YOU?" THat always shuts me up and i'd do my homework on my own. And then my dad would explain to me that i'll never learn aunless i do it myself. Which as right. How 'bout you guys? Did you do your homework on your own when you were kids?

No, not my mom. She is very strict. You have to do your own. My dad, I can always ask him and he will explain what he knows but will never do it, of course.

I did, my mom sometimes would help in some areas I don't understand especially in Math but mostly she gives examples then I would be on my own. When I reached grades 5 and 6 I never did ask for help anymore because the people around would say that I'm already big. Today, I sometimes help with the assignments of my younger cousins and nephews but only to give examples and some ideas.

No, I didn't I was on my own, I was raised by my grandmother, and she didn't finish school. So I really didn't have anyone to help me. I would call friends on the phone when I did need a little assistance. And I finished high school on the Honor Roll.

Wow. If my dad had snapped at me like that I would have stopped trying to do my homework at all. If I asked for help means I couldn't do it by myself.Thankfully if I had asked for help my mom and dad would have helped but I never needed any help. And unfortunately, when it came to algebra, my mom couldn't help.

I never had help with my homework when I was a child. If I was stuck and asked my mother for help she said look in the encyclopedia (which was really outdated). Though I wish my parent took more interest in my schooling, I was lucky that I still did very well. My sister who is disabled however was not so lucky and didn't do well and had no support. I help my children with their homework every day. My daughter is in grade 8 and she does what she can independently but once she is stuck I will help her out. Even if I don't know the material I will try to figure it out to help her. I think it is important for parents to help their children out as it shows that you care about their education.

Although i'm all for independence, i do agree with you that it is important for parents to take interest in their kids schoolwork.

First I would like to say good for you for helping him. Secondly, are you close enough to his age that you were able to help him? I find that the kids are learning different things than when I went to school and I wouldn't be much help to them. Most of the work they do, I don't have a clue how to do. The math these days, for example, is so different than when I was a kid. I am now 51 years old so it has been many years since I went to school and when I went it was the basics, not all this stuff like calculous, if I am even saying it right, I don't know. When I was a kid I did my homework by myself. My parents come from Germany and didn't know much English so they couldn't help me, even if they wanted to. Just like I couldn't help the kids these days, even if I wanted to. And I have tried, but I was lost and didn't know how.

I was raised by my grandparents. I remember my grandmother helping with simple math. But once we got into higher grades my grandmother made it plain that she didnt understand it. Usually i never done my homework so i dont even know how i made it as far as i did. Teachers probably just wanted to get rid of me. Once i got into jr high all they ever did was practice sports, which i hate , i always sat out. I dont know how i passed that either. I was a rebel from way back i guess. Just floating along and not by high grades. The home ec was somewhat interesting. But our teacher was like a consitipated barbie doll. We gave her a really hard time. Just give me the thread and sewing machine and leave me alone. I got high grade there dispite all the goofing around. My daughter always did her homework. I dont remember her asking for help much. I was probably as much help to her as my grandma was to me. She now has kids of her own and helps her kids with their homework. She is in school to become a teacher and working as teachers aide. She will graduate in a couple of months. Iam so proud of her for this and for her helping her kids. Im sure it wasnt because of my example. Or maybe it is...she wants to break the stupid cycle.

Your dad was right when he said that you never learn anything unless you do it yourself, but, that doesn't mean we all don't appreciate a lending hand every now and then. There's nothing at all wrong with that. I don't remember doing much homework when I was little. I do remember doing my math homework with my mom. Whenever I'd get an answer wrong she'd bang my head against the wall. Gee.........I wonder why I don't have many memories of my having did my homework? LOL! At least your dad didn't beat you......... Have a great day and an even better one tomorrow! Purrs, Catwoman=^..^= & Mija

when i was very young i did but by the time i was at the end of primary school start of secondary it was down to me. Mum would have helped if i'd have needed it but i was pretty good at school and liked to find things out on my own. I don't learn very well unless i find the answer myself it doesn't seem to stick i can be given clues but i have to process it and work it out makes me feel i've achieved something. It was home from school fruit snack and drink usually milk upstairs homework then i could go out. i was one of those strange kids that liked school and learning.

No, it will be untruthful if I say I didn't think of taking any help regarding homework but my mom didn't let me do that. She used to say, "You do eat, sleep, drink by yourself, dear. You don't need help regarding those, do you?" Ahh, now that I came to think about it, I think it was jolly good for me that she never allowed to take me any help about my homework.

Hi Super, I would often have help with my homework when I was a kid and when I got older I helped others. The thing is you help, you do not do the work for them. I helped my own kids only when they were young, maybe up to grade 3. After that they worked on their own and needed no help from me. Blessings.

When I first start schooling, my mother will help me do my homework especially mathematical homework because I hate it. Then one day my mother where admit to hospital. I have no one to help me do my homework. My mum still worry about how I am going to do my homework because no body to help me do that. Even she sick, she worries about my homework. After thinking, I do my homework on my own. I realizes I cannot depend on others to do my work. I also don't my mother to worry my silly homework any more. If I don't understand, I ask my teacher. I start doing my own homework and don't ask my mother help anymore. I only ask if I don't understand. My mother was amazed finding out that I don't need her help anymore. From that moment, I know I can only learn if I do myself. That why I will not help others to do their homework, I will encourage them to do on their own.

When i was a kid i also do did my homework by myself. I dont rely on my parents since they never help me out. And they always told me that i will never learn if i keep on asking for someone to help me out. Even on drawings i also did it by myself without any adults supervision. That is the same reason why everytime i see my husbands nephew asking for help about his homework. It makes me wonder how he will become responsible if he keeps on relying on other people to help him out. His homework is even easy and now that computer exist it is even much easier compared before. That is why i just shake my head everytime he have to asked someone to help him out.

At least your nephew ask for help. Some kids are so lazy to do work that they want all the answers right at their face. Probably last time you were smart to figure out! haha. If i really need help i will ask my parents. But i guess thats when i really do not know the answer then i go and ask

Tha bad thing is, my nephew usually "remembers" that he has homework/project the day before he's supposed to submit it, so we end up doing it till past midnight nad me getting so cranky for having to stay up late for something we could have done way before deadline.
