Well, if you have had clothes for a long long time, they can become worn out and start to "deteriorate." Also, there are some moths that can get into the clothing and chew on it. These are known as clothes moths. The best way to prevent this is to keep closets and other areas where you keep clothes free of lint, dust and hair.

thank you for your response, in my old house i had that problem and got rid of all the clothes where they were, once i moved i made sure i had a whole new wardrobe because of that and kept mothballs in all the closets.

As has already been said, your socks and tshirts may just be getting old and worn and ready to be replaced. You also may be washing them too hard -- too rough a cycle, something wrong with your washer/dryer (most likely the washer), something you tend to forget to take out of your pocket when you wash, or harsh detergent. All those things could hasten the wearing out of your clothes. Also, the quality of your socks and tshirts has something to do with how long they wear before wearing out. If you have moths, you will likely see little tiny beige/brown things on the clothing and I think other articles of clothing would be affected too, not just underwear. But if they are already wearing and getting old, then the washer is a good place for them to finally come apart, getting holes.

Your t shirts will begin to deteriorate under the arms from deodorants and sweat. These things eat away at the materials eventually. Harsh detergents can also cause clothes to wear out faster. If your socks have holes in the toes or heels, check your shoes to see if there is a rough spot that's rubbing your sock. Or if your shoe slips up and down on your heel it will wear away at your socks. This is just normal wear and most everybody has that problem. Nothing lasts forever.
