What type of flooring do you have in your house?
Do you like it? Did you choose it or did it just come with your home? Why did you choose it? What do you like about it? What don't you like about it? If you could put down anything you wanted What would you choose?
I have ceramic tile throughout. I like it because it's easy to clean and the animals can't ruin it. It's also nice and cool in the summer. It's cold in the winter which is a bummer, but winters are short.
I had an area rug in the living room for a little while. I got it second hand for free. It was quite old and threadbare, but it was just a test rug to see if I could have a rug with my large fur family. I figured if I liked it, I'd buy a nicer one. Nice machine made area rugs are only about $75 here.
What a pain the rug was. It collected dirt and pet hair like crazy. I had to vacuum it every day and even once a day wasn't enough with all my animals. The darn thing was a fur magnet.
As if I couldn't guess that 11 cats and 2 dogs would all lay on it, leaving their fur behind. Then someone decided it's a great spot to pee. Grr And they continued to pee on it.
That was the end of it. I tossed it out. No more rugs for me. I can't have carpet or a rug even if I wanted it.
My animals are more important than the flooring or anything else in the house.

Linoleum is easy to clean and lasts a lot longer than carpet. For anyone with multiple pets ease of cleaning is important.

I have different flooring throughout the house. I have ceramic tile in the entryway, vinyl tile in the kitchen, living room, hallway, and bathroom and I have carpet in the bedrooms. Though my husband wants to get rid of the carpet altogether and just have the vinyl throughout the house. He doesn't like carpet, especially since we have kids and pets.
If I could have any flooring that I wanted I'd probably pick hardwood flooring. Too bad it's so darn expensive!

Hardwood is expensive, but it's a 1 time cost. If you plan on being in your house forever, then it's worth it.

I only have 2 medium sized dogs,(+ more cats than I can count) but carpet is a no go. I wouldn't want wood because my cats would see it as a huge scratching post, but pergo is really nice. My friend at The Urban Cat Project put pergo in both the cat houses. She loves it.

Years and years ago, I ripped up the old tacky wall to wall carpeting that the apartment had had since we moved in. Then did have an area rug in the living room too, just like you, and just like you, it became a fur magnet with my cats, and yes, they did the same thing...uh, pee on it on occasion...so out it went. Now I just have the bare wooden floors in the bedroom and living room, tile flooring in the bathroom and kitchen. It's been heavenly NOT having to vacuum anymore..

It seems as if the cats shed on rugs on purpose.
When I lived in SF, I had wall to wall and didn't have a problem with fur and peeing. Stick in an area rug and they are drawn to it.

We have carpet. It came with the mobile home when we purchased it. It's not very good carpet either. We hope to replace it with some type of wood one of these days. I would love to have tile in the kitchen and bathroom but don't know if we can with a mobile home. The floors might not take the weight.

It might not take the weight. Tile is heavy.
My house is cement foundation with cement blocks for walls. It can take anything.

I had all carpet until I started raising shih tzu and now I have vinyl throughout that looks like hardwood floor, easy to disenfect, easy to keep clean. The Shih Tzu do not shed, but still I had problems keeping the carpet clean with them here. I love my animals too, but I wish I could have beautiful carpet throughout or actual hardwood floors, then again, I hate cleaning carpet even without the pets. Carpet is a pain to have to shampoo and vacuum. I would want hardwood floors and carpet throughout ONLY if I had the money to hire a housekeeper, and I don't, so I will have to continue with the vinyl.
And I have a cat cattery, small cabin behind my house where my three silver persians live and where we will all soon be raising kittens hopefully. My goodness, I never saw so much hair in all my life. I am really having a problem grooming the cats. I will have to purchase sedation before I can cut their hair, thick, thick, thick fur hair on the Persians. They are all show quality. I love the beauty, but I wish for the slick regular cat look and I will shave them all down soon and let it grow back out. But.....I put vinyl in there too and layed some rugs on the floor for them to lounge on. Big mistake. Persians shed all over the place. Shih Tzu do not shed hair. Oh well....the rug was for Fairy and she knew it. Diamond came to lay on it, and Fairy quickly ran her off, even though Fairy does not pay it any attention, she will not allow Diamond on that rug. So they really don't even use it and still it is full of fur.
The woes of the pet owner are such as this, however, the pets are worth it all, I agree. Every form of refuge has its price!
