Batchoy. A menu from leftovers

I was watching a local documentary about life on the streets. They feature a story on batchoy, a street menu that came from left over foods in the restaurant. Batchoy is a menu or dish, that came from another dish, it is like cooking a dish twice but with two different tastes. The leftovers come from various food establishments, they were collected and they were sorted out. Foods that have some meat left were taken and they sell it to people. People, who bought it, wash it and cook it again, and they eat it. Ok this is bothering for some, but for those who buy these kinds of food, they thrive on it.
What bothers me is the implication it has on the food establishments (their name was all over the trash), isn’t it their obligations to have a proper waste disposal? And how about the city officials? This is very amusing and disturbing for me, to think that this business has been striving for about 20 years now.

oh you are still here, it was morning now in my country and last night when I posted some topics you were also one of the first who answered
and hours later you are still here
oh well back to the topic, it is really weird and the journalist who took the documentary actually eat the food they got from trash, an award winning performance by the journalist.

It seems a little disgusting to me.. HAVing to eat what's leftover from others?? Are they clean or did some customers eat it b4 spiting out again because it was awful?? And that, the same food will be collected and be re-cooked again for sale??
YUCKS!!! I will never gonna eat that, and though they are washed and clean, but just the thought of it is simple disgusting, and i wonder who will ever eat them.. And ple whom eat them, do they know where does the food comes from??

Yakkk!!! It's a good thing I'm not eating Batchoy and I am not buying cooked foods the street vendors either. But how about those people who do. Tsk!tsk!tsk! How can these people do that kind of business at the expense of other people? And you are right, there must be proper waste disposal. These city officials have always been lax in doing their responsibilities. They will only act once it is already in the papers. That is not something new at all. Most of these officials are just sitting on their duties!

Ive seen it also and it has been featured a couple of times that some people eat leftovers from fast food chains and restos and they cook it to have a meal. But Batchoy here in negros and iloilo is different they are made from noodles with pork, veggies, chicharon, egg, and onions. But i know that there should be a proper disposal with the food chains and i know some of their leftovers are made for sale for some who raised pigs. And i guess it should be brought to the attention of our city officials because who knows some of this disposal of wastes can cause diseases someday for those people who consume it.

i was able to watch this show last night ..just a small portion as i went down and dunk cold water...it really is heartbreaking to see those people eat from leftovers and yes you are right about proper disposal of their wastes..those fastfood chains...that is a lot of garbage don't you think?i really do not know if it is also done here in cebu but i really could not think of myself eating those.

I like clean fresh food.. I am not crazy about leftovers nor would I want to eat something cooked from someone else's leftovers.. I don't think this would appeal to me at all, as a matter of fact, I wouldn't even attempt to eat something like this..

I watched that, i think that was last night..
Sad that some of our countrymen are into this business. But, I can't blame them. They too, ate leftovers from restaurants before they thought of making it into a business. What is more sad, other poor people eat it also..But what can they do? They only have a few cents in their pockets and the only way they can eat those kinda foods, is to buy from those who collects it..Maybe, one of their reason is, for a few meager cents or pesos, they can eat what "rich" people eats. And rather than starve or eat noodles always or just rice dashed with a pinch of salt or soy sauce, at least they have a variety to choose from..
I know that big and popular restaurants have proper waste disposal and management. But sometimes, they can't help it if some of these people crash into the garbage when the guards aren't looking. Or, maybe, they do give the leftovers away to the poor..
What can the city officials do? Put them in jail? Unless they have a citywide campaign on banning this kind of business, and unless they have more feeding programs for the poor, it will never stop..
Poor people need to eat too..and they will find other ways to satisfy their hunger..
