If you are using windows you can always go for Windows Movie Maker. It's free and it's built-in in Windows itself. Although it may not have all the features you are looking for, it's basically the easiest way to make or edit a video. It has all the basic functions, effects, transitions and you can even burn it to a video cd or dvd directly. But if you want a really good movie maker with all the features, you gotta have to invest. :) If you are using linux (ubuntu, fedora, etc..) you can search it in their repository. For ubuntu, open synaptic package manager and look for video editing software. They have several of it there, read the description and you can choose what to install. I edit my movies and videos in Ubuntu with Kino and it's free. Hope this helps.

moviemaker is very user friendly. but you cannot use it in a advanced way. when i was doing editing works on video, i usually choose adobe premiere. for photoslideshoe programs, i use flash, total video converter 3.12, ipod slideshow softwares, etc., i use 3 to 4 softwares for completing my video projects. but i finish it finally in moviemaker for saving as a whole movie, where i have so many mini finished clips. moviemaker is an excellent software. but i reccomend that only for beginners, to finish their whole movie, whish is easy to use.
