FLOOD - have you dared "swimming" into it?

Last thursday, it was raining hard. Most of the places in metro got flooded.
Me and my officemates went home at around 7pm and we did not expect that Ortigas, where our office area is, was submerged with water. The side where Robinson was had a 6 inches depth. We really wanted to go home, and what we did was to go through, when we reached the Guadix area (where ADB is) we did not realize that we're into a lot more worse. It was like 2 feet deep.
It was my first time going through such, and in a way I just savored the moment. I mean, I enjoyed it (harhar), although, I know for a fact that it's not hygienic.
So have you tried swimming into flooded areas?

I never realized that that area can be flooded like that. It is good thing that I went home earlier than you did. I was really anticipating that rains do come in at that time that is why I try to be home as early as possible. I have not seen that kind of flood in Ortigas yet and am quite surprised that it was that deep in there. Well I was like that about several decades ago when I was attending a review school in Recto. I was scheduled to be there at night and it was raining heavily. Our session ended at about 8 in the evening and wheni got out the flood was really knee deep already. I hurried back to find all public transport full. Until i was forced to really hang and not being able to sleep. The travel was not that fast either as traffic was quite heavy and it took around 3 hours just to travel from Recto to Sta Mesa, where if it was on a reguar traffic and condition it would take me about an hour to travel. I got home by almost midnight already and that was really a very bad experience for me.

I was also shocked to see the water that deep. It really did not occur to me that the place would be flooded. I just have to satisfy that kind of curiousity on how it would be facing the flood.

This is why i am so thankful that i live in an area that doesn't get flooded that easily... and even if it does... the jeep would just take us to an area that is not flooded... and from there... we could just take a tricycle...
If i am in Manila... i think i wouldn't dare go through the flood... since i heard stories people being electrocuted or submerging in manholes... and i do not want that to happen to me...

Hi try,
I haven't tried really! I grew up in a place where flooding is not very common and even when I was renting in the City, we don't get that much flood!
It's pretty scary really when the current is strong but I have seen a lot of happy kids enjoying the water during that time!

I guess, I have to say it is indeed dangerous swimming during flood esp. with strong currents.

When I was growing up our yard only would flood after a big rain every time. Of course I was outside swimming and playing in the water each time as were all the other neighbor kids who didn't have it lucky enough to have a natural swimming pond in their yard. When my kids were small I allowed them to go outside and play in the puddles and any water in our yard where it might have flooded slightly. It was always fun when I was a kid and I didn't want my kids to miss out. Would I do that today? In the rural areas where I have lived in my lifetime, I have no problem allowing kids to go out and play in the flooded waters in the yard. However, I never went outside my own yard or neighborhood, and I never allowed my kids to do that either. It has to be somewhat controlled because you need to know what kinds of objects might be hiding under the water that can't be seen. If it was a flood on a larger scale, there would be no way I would be outside playing in that water and I would not allow my grandkids out in it either. There could be undercurrents that could sweep them away and into some kind of drainage system where they would drown, not to mention the hidden objects that could be dangerous and the chemicals that might have leaked from containers along the way.

I guess, it is safer when you swim in the flood within your yard rather than in some strange areas. I have to agree with you that whatever you enjoyed as kid should also be something that your kids should not miss.

tryxiness , no i haven't tried that and i never thought that it flooded in that area (ADB). I will never really swim nor ever step my feet in a flooded area maybe because i am afraid of the illnesses it might bring me and also i just dont like like i think it is dirty.

I have to say that I will never do the swimming again. I am like you scared of microorganisms that might cause me illnesses.

I remember that. I guess it was in 1995, if I remember it right, I was watching TV patrol, and Pia Hontiveros was delivering the report and she was like tied on a light post so that she would not be flown by the wind.

I've never swum in flooded waters (we seldom have floods here anyway) but years ago, when the drainage systems were not so efficient, we have floods. I remember driving along a road in heavy downpour and encountered a flooded road. The flood area was quite large and it looked like a large pond and the road was hardly visible. I had no choice but drove through it anyway, but I tell you, it was a scary experience. Now, I wouldn't recommend that you swim through a flood. It may look calm on the surface, but you never know how strong the undercurrents are. You may just get sucked below or dragged by fast flowing currents, and drown. Also you can't see where you are going and what was underneath that flooded area. It could have been part of a river or big canal, where these parts are deeper and currents are strong. Don't take chances even if you have swum in a flood before and gotten out safely. That may give you a false sense of safety. One wrong move the next time, and it can cost you your life.

After that experience, I vowed not to do it again. I mean, I am basically scared of the microorganisms that may give skin diseases and stuff.

when i was in the province i was dared to swim the river while flooding, me and the rest of my cousins do this every time the river flood. our river is enough to swim but we are very careful in swimming because the flood will take us to go with the flow. Now, it's quite different because we don't have river in my new place.

I remembered quite a long time now, after a typhoon hit our place, where the sole of your shoes couldnt escape from the waters underneath. The flood has covered the city and it flood waters did come to the lower part of the house, all we did was get the water off and clean the whole house. It is really frustrating sometimes, when heavy down pour always results to floods in my place.

last Thursday? as in last week? oh good thing hubby is on leave. as for me, oh yeah I kinda experienced "swimming" on flooded area. When I was young and cute
OK that was when I was still in the province and a big storm hit our place and there were floods everywhere, must be knee to waist deep. We have to go through it because my mom is saving her pigs and I wanted to help her.

Just a bit of advice, 'swimming' through flood waters is VERY dangerous. The currents around your feet can literally drag you underneath the water and carry you off. That's how many people die when it floods. Ok, onto your question. No, I have never tried swimming into flooded areas. If I think our street is going to flood, I head to a place in town where it's higher.

I know the water here is quite dirty especially in Manila. And I was really thinking of all the diseases that may come to it.
But the experience was really nice!
