To become a police officer, you need 60 college credits. And this is for the state of NY, I don't know about anywhere else. I found this mind-boggling... don't they have a police academy where they teach you everything?
I guess some stuff makes sense like criminal psychology or whatever, but that should be part of the police academy training program, not something additional you have to go to college for beforehand.

Almost all states require you to have at least some college prior to entering the Police Academy. I'm not sure why you find that so 'mind-boggling'. It's the same as if you got an Associate Degree and then went on to get a Bachelor's Degree in a more specific field of work. The police academy prepares you for police work, self-defense, how to handle specific types of situations, as well as the legal aspects of you actions as a police officer, etc. I don't have a problem with the police academy being a little more picky about who they admit. Would you want just anyone to be able to get into the police academy, for example, someone that barely made it to high school graduation?
