Is it legal to do this?

A friend of mine told me he made 300,000 dollars by selling pennies for scrap metal. With the price of copper so high, why does the US mint continue to make pennies? I don't know if he had to melt them down or just sold them outright, but it sounds like a great way to make money. Correct me if I'm wrong....?

They stopped making solid copper pennies in 1982. The pennies since 1982 only have a thin copper plating. There is no way he could have gotten hold of $300,000 worth of solid copper pennies. He would have had to melt them down to sell them. No legit scrap metal company would buy them for scrap.
