would you opt for thyroidectomy or continue with suppression therapy?

having multi-nodular goiter for years had meant daily intake of thyroid hormones to the nodules and glands from enlarging further, daily intake of calcium and vitamin d to keep my bones from becoming brittle, regular blood tests - FT3, FT4, TSH to know if my body's thyroid hormones are in normal levels, thyroid ultasound to keep track or monitor the size of the nodules and the glands... Quite a number of things to do which you really have to allot time and of course, enough budget. and sometimes, one could get fed up with the routine. but for fear of other complications that may arise, i just had to persevere. a friend of mine however suggested that it may be better for me to undergo thyroidectomy, to take out those nodules once and for all... so that i don't have to undergo those blood tests and ultrasound, and those other routines that i have to do. a relative who's a surgeon has even offered to do the surgery for me, free of charge. but then, i really am afraid of going under the knife. also, thyroidectomy is considered a major surgery and i have heard learned of some cases where the operations had caused major complications - like patients lossing their voice after the or having the para-thyroid gland accidentally removed. and my endocrinologist also advised me against surgery since the nodules that i have are not malignant. she say's there's no assurance that i would not be having thyroid nodules again if i undergo surgery.

I opted for thyroidectomy than to undergo those tests over and over again. Tests and medicines are expensive so I decided to have it removed in 1993. If you believe in your endoc I don't think you have to be afraid of those things said to you because those are isolated cases. It just makes my voice hoarse for one week and after that, things are normal until now which is about 15 years ago and no nodules have been showed up on my throat again. Know what.. I'm just afraid of the side effect of those medicines on my kidney and liver rather than going under the knife.
