OH NO! Our new kitty sprays! :(

A beautiful, playful marmalade kitty adopted us a little over two weeks ago. All has been going well until a few days ago. I noticed him squating on my husband's shoe and he was peeing! I No'd him, and he went scurrying along. Yesterday, I definately noticed a smell of pee in both of our closets. And today, I'm pretty sure he peed in the hall! It's hard finding the area he marked, so I know I haven't completely cleaned up everything. I'm totally sick about this, and I'm not sure how to stop it! I've totally cleaned out his litterbox area, and sprayed the known pee areas with cleaner. My husband says he can't handle a cat that sprays, and if I can't figure out how to make him stop, we're going to have to get rid of him! I have two questions: How can I get him to stop spraying? Is there something that will totally get rid of the pee smell? I would guess he's 3-4 months old, and he's not neutered yet. That's high on the to-do list.

I found that citrus will mask the smell for around a month. You have to reapply it every month though. They have a more sensitive sense of smell than we do and specifically look for that odour. Fixing him is not a guarantee that he will stop spraying. My vet says 50% chance it will stop them. But once the habit is there, it is hard to stop, fixed or not. Unfortunately since he was outside for a time (you don't know how long), that would make him want to mark territory. Apparently, indoor/outdoor cats are more likely to spray than strictly indoor cats. Strictly kept indoors, they know their territory and have no reason to mark it. The sooner you get him fixed the better. That, or sorry, get rid of him. I couldn't stand the smell either.

I found Grapefruit Juice, a big jug, really cheap and used that. Soaked the item or carpet where it was sprayed, then blotted up the excess and let it dry in. I didn't wash it out and it won't hurt the fabric.

Thanks a lot Annie! You always have such good advice! I found an enzyme cleaner, and one of the ingredients is citus oil. I hope it does the trick!
