Again, 'Zero Tolerance' raises its ugly head. http://www.nbc10.com/education/17609456/detail.html?rss=phi&psp=weird-news They're more concerned about control than they are about curriculum. And, how can the district have any authority if it allows the individual schools to overrule its authority? Something is definitely wrong in NM and needs to be rectified!! I have no problem with wanting students to be neat and clean. I don't have a problem with them wanting only school colors to be worn. But, some things just aren't worth the battle and actually cause more problems by taking away from the things that are most important? What blows my mind completely, though, is that even though the district (a higher authority) has set the rule for a parent-teacher conference before any suspension, it allows the schools to override its authority. So where IS their authority? And what is this child gaining by petty punishment? It's certainly not her education. Do you agree?

The pupil was wearing school uniform. A teacher should have asked her to tuck her shirt in. It was silly that she was suspended for three days. It is not something that will benefit her education. I went to a secondary school that was strict about uniform. Teachers would take away a plastic bag if a student came to school with one. The head teacher said a pupil carrying a plastic bag brought a bad name to the school. Earrings other than studs would be taken away and put in a teacher's drawer. I am a primary school teacher and on a teaching practice I was at a school where the children didn't wear school uniform. The head teacher didn't believe school uniform made a better pupil. Wealth, poverty or sloppy standards were seen in the children's clothes. What matters most are things like happiness and education. My university lecturer told my year group about a messy looking student that did exceptionally well academically. It was funny because my friend and I knew who he was talking about because she had been on school experience with us two years before hand. "Never judge a book by its cover". By all means try for high standards because some children copy this but others are individuals and there is nothing wrong with that.

YES I AGREE however every country is different and in Canada this is unlikely to happen but i am sure we have situations where a student is suspended would be laughed at by someone in another country As i say it would not happen here so that is about it Good Luck

That's pretty asinine. She could have left the restroom with it untucked, or if she's chubby, she doesn't want to draw attention to it. Schools have gone overboard with their policies, ignoring real issues.
