Making new friends in a new area

I've moved half a dozen times in the last two years, and while I always regret going farther away from local friends, I enjoy making new ones as I go along. This last move was nearly 400 miles and it's a little overwhelming. I'm interested how you go about making new aquaintences and forming relationships in a new place.

I guess you start with your neighbors and your new job, then go to the local hangouts, sooner or later you hook up with someone you like, i always do.
