How do you keep macaroni and cheese dishes from tasting bland?

I don't like plain boxed macaroni and cheese. It tastes too bland. Sometimes, I spice things up by adding red pepper flakes or chopped grilled onions to my macaroni. Other times, I add my own sliced cheese or fresh shredded cheddar cheese while cooking. How do you spice up your macaroni and cheese so that it doesn't taste so bland?

I always add 2 pieces of sliced cheese to every box of macaroni and cheese I make. Sometimes I'll add in some veggies, like peas or beans or whatever we feel like at the time. I love to have hot dogs and ketchup with my mac n cheese. Oh yeah, the other thing that makes it taste good? Western French Dressing. But I'm from Wisconsin, so I think Western French Dressing makes everything taste better!

That's cool! I think my stomach would have a fit if I put ketchup on my mac and cheese. Though I do love salsa on mac and cheese. Maybe it would be the same thing. Might give that some thought.

Like RedKathy, I love adding diced/stewed tomatoes to mine. Alternatively, to make it healthier and more flavorful, I usually add some broccoli, a touch of minced garlic, and a small amount of onion. Much tastier and better for you!

Very good ideas! Sometimes, I add frozen (cooked) veggies while cooking. Very tasty and affordable.

My son likes them the way they are and doesn't like me to add anything more. I only eat it now and then and may add extra cheese.

Velveeta Shells and Cheese - MMmmmmm MMmmmmmm Good!!
I don't like macaroni and cheese but I do like the shells and cheese for it tastes a lot better. I guess it's because of the velveeta cheese? What ever the reason, I do like it much better than the blue box. You could add anything you want to it or eat it plain as it is and still taste just as good.

I haven't had that in ages! But, you're right. It's so much better than the blue box. I think it's the Velveeta. My mom used to make mac and cheese with Velveeta. I might try that for my daughter. Thanks!

I like to top mac and cheese with stewed tomatoes or salsa. My son's favorite meal in the whole world is mac & cheese with tuna and green beans! That child, who is now 21, could still eat that every day!

When I am in the mood to dress things up, I add veggies and/or tuna to my boxed mac 'n' cheese. I will also add spices such as black pepper, dill or turmeric to spice things up.

The stuff that you mention is the stuff that I do. One day when I had nothing better in the house, I tossed in some sliced olives, and that tasted pretty interesting.

I've never really cared for boxed mac and cheese. So because of that I usually make my own. I just use boxed mac and add my own cheese. Usually Velveeta cheese is some of the best. I then add other cheese sometimes to spice it up. I'd also use garlic or other spices.

You could add pepper, herbs and maybe dried tomatoes for seasoning. Here are some interesting and delicious macaroni and cheese recipes and videos that I am sure you will love. http://www.ifood.tv/network/macaroni/recipes

I had a friend who used to put fresh roasted garlic in it. I'm not a big garlic fan but my children loved it.
