Can someone please explain how "HUD" (Govt. Low Income Housing) works exactly??

I live in NYC and I'm interested in buying a condo/apartment instead of paying rent. I heard about HUD (www.hud.gov) which is some sort of government low income housing. I don't know much about it and the website has too much information on it that I don't know where to start. Somebody mentioned something like all you pay is $2000 or something and they give you a mortgage, i'm not sure of anything beyond that. Is there anyone here who knows enough about it and is able to break it down into understandable terms as opposed to all the stuff they have on their website? Really appreciate it. Thanks.

I would start by finding a realtor and mortgage person that you trust. They would be able to help you through the process. I had a friend, here in Arizona, that did it but, but that was over 10 years ago. Good luck!
