I have a four year old and a one month old and they both sleep with me and my husband. I know a lot of people that allow their children to sleep with them. But i hear a lot that you should not let your children sleep with you. What do you think?

Just on a personal level, I don't let my kids sleep with us. When they have a nightmare, or feel they need an extra hug or whatever, they know that they only have to ask and they are allowed into our bed. However, they both have their own beds and have had since they were about 18 months old. I just feel personally, that you can't have them in your bed forever, and that at some point you have to move them out - when will that be? At what age? I do love it when they sleep with us, but it does mean that I don't sleep as well. My younger daughter moves out of the covers, which pulls them off me and then tries to push me out, but she does do all this with her arm over me, which is just lovely!

My kids both have their own bed as well. I just found that my one month old sleeps better with me and therefore i get to sleep better. My four year old is terrified to sleep by himself. He just cries and cries and says "mommy i'm scared". My heart wont allow me to listen to that all night. I cant let my child be afraid and do nothing about it.

Sorry I thought you meant they slept with you the whole time. Of course the baby sleeps better with you - mine did too and it was so easy to get them back off if they woke up too. Your elder is probably going through a phase, do they start in their own bed, and then come into yours? I do think it's lovely being with your kids - they aren't small forever, and it's something that stays with you for a long time. Enjoy it while it lasts.

i guess a lot depends on the individual. you know whats best for your child and you. my daughter still lets her 7 yr. old sleep with her. he has bad allergies and sometimes asthma attacks. which causes him to have choking spells to the point of throwing up sometimes at night.

I don't have any kids (I'm only 19), but my boyfriend's little brother is 11 and he still sleeps with his parents sometimes. I think that it might be a good thing that your child will bond with you a bit more, but it may also make them a little less independent.

My baby is 1 year and 9 months old now and I still sleep with him on our bed! I dont know, I just love having him within my reach and knowing that I can get him his milk when he asked for one at night and lull him to sleep when he wakes up.
