Firefox and Flash Player

Recently I have been updating frefox and the various ad-ons that I have. However, for some reason I have to manually install flash player. That's all beans and gravy, I don't doing that, except I can't. I am not sure why, but I will close firefox (including download manager and any various firefox components) and yet, it still tells me I need to close it before installing flash player. Can anyone tell me why this is happening and what I can do to fix it? Do I need to use IE to download the flashplayer, and if so would it work with firefox, my preferred browser? I appreciate any input!
