I have several cook books that I have collected over the years. I also subscribed to cooking magazines. These are "Taste of Home" and "Quick Cooking". I am also bad for standing in the grocery store check out line and purchasing the small magazines there such as "Nestle Cookies" or what have you. It is a very addicting habit I am afraid!

I've quite a number of cookbooks, that I've bought from book sales. I like looking at the pictures of the food and dishes. I had planned to do serious cooking once I retire; so that's why I collect these books!

I get a free magazine from kraftfoods.com I think when you sign up there is a box to check if you want the magazine. You can view recipes online also. They also have menu planners and sometimes contests.

i only had 2 cook books, the one is a pasta cook book while the other one seems to have varieties of recipe. the one i had was subdivided into several categories such as soup, rice, chicken, pork, beef, seafood even lambs, pasta also, bread and pastries, and desserts. it was almost an all-in-one cook book. but sadly some of the ingredients in the cook book were not available in our place. so i hardly use the cook book now.

I find it hard to find some of those exotic spices used in certain recipes that I have in some of my books. Sometimes I can find substitutes for them. Do you make many of the pasta dishes?

I only have 4 or five cooking books so far. I prefer to browse my recipes online on internet better than looking for the right cooking books. But I think I would like to try the books you mentioned.

I love looking up the recipes on Food Network! I am still addicted to cook books though. I have been restraining myself over the past year and I have slowed down buying them unless I find them at yard sales or thrift stores. If I find one that I like I try to sign them out from the library.

You sound just like me! I have shelves of cookbooks - many of which I do use. I always scan through the ones at the checkout, and usually buy them!

Yep that is a major problem with me, too long in the check out line browsing the cook books there! I think they do that to us on purpose! LOL

I have a ton of cook books and I hardly ever use any of them. I do have a box of recipes that I do use though. I usually find a recipe in a magazine and try it and if I like it then I'll put it in my box and keep it. I have my cookbooks in a drawer in the kitchen and I guess I just never really think to pull them out and try a recipe out. I do need to go through them sometime and try some new recipes and maybe I'll find some good ones.

Yes I do understand this. I have several magazines that I do not go through often enough. I hope that you will go through yours and find yourself a new recipe!

I have several hundred cookbooks. I have a tall bookcase full, with more stacked on top, many in the bottom half of the china cabinet, and at least a dozen boxes waiting to be unpacked, as soon as we get more bookshelves. (22 boohshelves so far.) I buy many at thrift stores and yard sales, and my favorites are the older cookbooks and recipe files, and the community cook books.

I love trying the older recipes, although I do change the recipes some. My favorite find was a recipe box where the previous owner had written the dates that she had prepared the recipes, and a few comments, on the cards. On a recipe for meatballs she had written how many a person ate. My girls love having the different books to choose recipes from when it is their turn to cook. I have also been looking for duplicates of family favorites so each girl has her own collection.

Now that is very neat! That is a true part of history. I never thought of writing notes on the recipe cards. Hmm... very interesting point! Might try to check into that!

maybe 5. I don't even use them. If I am making something or looking for something new to make I just use the internet. uses less paper and space. My husband is usually the one who will make things that are new anyway and he has that palate if he tasted it once he can recreate it. I wish I was like that.

I have 3 or 4. My hubby usually finds them. Ones he thinks might be useful like the one we have on crockpot cooking he buys. However we both have the habit of finding recipes online.

i bought one maybe some 1 year ago and after trying one recipe i quit. i found it even more harder to execute then the tv cooking shows and it is something i would like to learn from my aunt who is a very good cook and she has some books but i can understand that being a student i cannot give much time to it and i really love to learn and will do in future. i can make a few things and i am good at them.

I understand about wanting to learn from your aunt. My mom taught me quite a bit when I lived at home. I do still enjoy collecting those cook books though! I love trying new things! Good luck to your future endeavors!

LOL...collecting cookbooks is a passion! I probably have hundreds. When I go to yard sales or flea markets, the first thing I look for is cookbooks. My best 'find' was a copy of Mary Margaret McBride's, Encyclopedia of Cooking - over 1500 pages. It was only 50 cents, and is my favorite. Doesn't stop me from adding to the collection though...lol. The only hard part of having so many? Finding a particular recipe and wondering which book (or magazine) I saw it in! Happy collecting!

This book was published in the late 1950's. It's a terrific book, most of the recipes are older, and use everyday ingredients. Most recipes also have more than one variation. I can't say enough about this book. Mine was in poor condition when I bought it (several pieces and had to be held together with a rubber band), but I had it rebound, which ended up being a lot less than I thought...$30! The woman who rebound it liked it so much, she found one online and got it for herself. If you decide to find one, be careful. In the 1960's, it was republished in an edition with 12 volumes. It's easy to buy one volume, thinking it's the whole book. I haven't been a member here long enough to post a link for you, but if you go to www.abebooks.com you can find it with pictures of the book. Search from highest to lowest price. You can also find it at amazon.com

I think I have 5 left out of the many that I used to have. I loaned some out and never got them back. Then I had a yard sale and got rid of the rest of them. That was back when I moved to Bullhead City, Arizona. Sure wish I had some of them. I am trying to find a recipe that I really liked. It was a crowd size recipe, called Meatball Stew. You used pearl onions, frozen vegetables and canned potatoes. The meatballls were cooked in the oven. I would know the book if I saw it.

Good luck at finding that recipe. Have you tried looking for something similar online? I would put the recipe name in a search bar and see if you come up with something! It sounds very good!

It was real good. I have been on line but none of them even come close to what this one was. I will try one some day. The meatballs that I made had many spices in them so when everything cooked together the spices really flavored everything. I might just try my own recipe. I kind of remember what all was in it.

Oh I have so many cookbooks that I lost count. I love going to garage sale or rummage sales and picking up old cookbooks. They have the best recipes from yesteryear that people tend to have forgotten about. I tell ya making a recipe from those old books and inviting some older folks over will brighten their day. I do this with an older neighbor and I get to hear stories about certain recipes from back in the day. I also have gotten some much needed pointers.

Yes it is great! I like that idea. I would love to cook for my granny like that. Sadly she has alzheimers and would not understand. I miss the days of talking to her about cooking and of watching her cook as well.

I haven't counted, but I do have alot of cookbooks. I also take the "Taste of Home" magazine and love it. I've thought about getting "Quick Cooking", but just can't justify paying for two magazines. I do get a free magazine from Kraft amd most of those are quick and easy type recipes.

Yes I know what you mean about the costs. I alternated the magazines and I also bought 2 of the hardback books Best of for 2005 and 2006 I think are the years. I also get the Kraft magazine and I love the coupons they put in them at times. The last really good one was for a bottle of free kraft dressing!

I like cooking but I have no cook books. When I want to make dinner,i will study from my mother. She is very experienced.I think the cook book is not very useful. We can refer the ingredient?mixture ratio and the cook time. But because of the different of fire time?skill, there will different taste. So we should put into practice.
