Travelling to the Deep South

I'm going to Louisiana, Mississippi and Tennessee in January of next year and I want some information from people who live there. Besides the obvious Graceland and New Orleans and other touristy places, I'm wondering where else to visit? Also, what is the weather like there in mid January? I know it's winter but (this is probably a stupid question..! ) does it ever snow in the deep south? I'm also really looking forward to the food! I can't wait to eat at as many places I can! Any suggestions as to where to find good food?

Graceland sounds fun, The Grand Old Opry would be nice to see, along with Dollywood and there are bus tours in Tennessee to see some really nice celebrity homes. I don't know much about Mississippi but you could always check out the above ground graveyards in Louisiana...kind of morbid but they really are neat and there is the Marie LaVeau grave (she was a famous Voodoo woman) and I've heard they have nighttime festivals like in the streets. I hope you take lots of pictures and share them LOL Have fun on your trip oh, and depending where you go cold weather usually doesn't hit till mid November. I forgot about the Grand Ole Opry. Is Opryland in business there still? That is fun to go to.

Welcome to US. I am sure you will have an interesting visit, since there is much to see and learn. My suggestion is that you should start in March, because you could be pleasantly surprise about heavily accumulation of snow in some areas. This unusual welcome of snow caught many by surprise. Many ,not accustomed to see the ' white stuff, ' could not drive in it. Enjoy the fine cuisine in the South. Just ask at the ' visitors information booth ' for the fine food locations.

I enjoyed the ferry ride in Mississippi, but I guess you've probably been on those before. Tennessee has such beautiful mountain ranges that I'd recommend taking a trip into the mountains. They probably have guides for trails, but just being in the car and seeing them is something. Also I know a lot of places have tourist attraction 'books', a lot of them in hotel rooms. If you ask the locals, even the desk clerk at a hotel, they usually give the best recommendations.

Hi coffeeshot. I live in South Carolina. My parents have a cabin in Gatlinburg, Tennessee. Gatlinburg is a big tourist area. It is very close to Pigeon Forge and that is where Dollywood is located. They have a ton of things to do there like the Dixie Stampede, a ton of outlet malls and shopping places galore. One of my families favorite places is the Apple Barn. They sell fresh apple cider, apple pies, etc. I believe they offer carriage rides there too. I have never been to Louisiana or Mississippi so I can not help you there. I hope you really enjoy your trip to the Deep South. Happy MyLotting!

Another great attraction in Pigeon Forge, TN is the Black Bear Jamboree and Dinner Theatre. The night time show is great, especially during Christmas season. It is a sit down dinner in a half circle with floor and several tiers of tables. We enjoyed sitting at the top and looking down and the show on stage while we ate. Also, they have a breakfast show as well. The times we were there the Blackwood Quartet sang. You can check them out at this link. http://www.stoneoakweb.com/smoky-mountain-news-info/black-bear-jamboree.html

The only thing I can suggest that you haven't mentioned is Nashville. LOl As for snow, yes it does snow in Tennessee. I remember I had a friend down there, and I asked him if it ever snowed down there, and he told me it did. That much i remember. LOL

My sister lives in East TN, and yes, it snows there. If you get to East Tennessee, you should try to get to Chattanogga, (of the choo choo fame.) They have a beautiful aquarium there, along with all kinds of wierd touriest things. Up the west side of Louisiana is a garden that is supposed to be really beautiful, but the day I was free in Louisiana my ankle was so badly sprained, I spent the day in the hotel in bed latch hooking a rug. I've heard that it snows there too, but not very often. I will say that the Austin Texas area is due some snow - and when we get some, they often do as well. If it does snow, it'll probably be in late Jan., early Feb. but that's just the norm, it has snowed earlier.

I lived in Biloxi, MS for many years. After the hurricane there isn't a whole lot left to really encourage you to see. Ocean Springs is a cute little town. If you like doughnuts you must try Tato-Nut doughnut shop. They are the best! As far as I know it hasn't snowed there since 1997. Moss Point has a gator farm and you can go out in the bayous on these boats. We had fun doing that once. There are the casinos. The Beau Rivage is the prettiest. Hard Rock is cool too. Even the casinos aren't as good because of Katrina. In New Orleans, I know you said "besides New Orleans" but I love the beignets and cafe au lait at Cafe du Monde. That is my favorite place to go in Louisiana. There are tons of little shops and art galleries in the French Quarter. In case you have never been there, the smell is something a lot of people don't like. It is a smelly little place! And don't step in anything wet!! I don't know much about the rest of Louisiana so I can't help you there. Can't help with Tennessee.

Yes, it does snow in the South, but not that often anymore. It does get cold, but you never know from week to week what the weather is going to be like. I haven't been to Memphis or Mississippi in many years, so I wouldn't know where to recommend for food.
