Does being in front of a T.V. too close, cause a person to wear eye glasses?

I have heard that it does. What about you? Do you know of anyone that has worn glasses due to them being too close and in front of a T.V. screen?

Hi cream97. I don't know if sitting too close to the TV really causes a person to have to wear eye glasses. But, I've been told when I was younger that it does. I would hear that a lot. Someone would always say "don't sit so close to the TV, it's bad for your eyes". I suppose it could be true. I don't know. I wear glasses so I don't sit that close.

I don't anyone that wear glasses because to close to TV screen. I wear glasses because I read to near and read for long hours. I like reading and can read almost 3 books pages around 100 in a day. I can say myself as book worm. Now I seldom read books because I am busy with my assignments.

I don't know. That's what I was told as a youngster. That's what I tell my young ones now. I do know that if I'm too close I don't see it well. It's better at a distance. I don't know if it actually messes with our eyes. But it's better to see the pigments of the tv at a distance.

Hello cream. I think that it is so because when you sit too close to a TV or when you read a book for a long time without letting your eyes get relaxed, it is easier to get near-sighted.

Yes......and the computer screen too.........for two reasons. 1). The T.V. screen and the computer screen are both only one dimensional and that will affect eye sight. 2). (Especially concerning the computer screen. Not so much the T.V. screen) is that the computer screen is so bright and you're usually closer to a computer screen than you are to the T.V. screen. I read somewhere that it's usually a good idea to look away from the computer screen to give your eyes a rest. Personally, I live online and I know that my eyes are being affected. As a matter of fact it does. The radiations emitted from the T.V screen effect the eyes pretty badly. The emitions are due to the magnetic nature of the T.V set and the color resolution of the screen. It is always better to sit at a distance from the set.

i think it's strains your eyes, but i don't know if it really causes long term damage.anybody i knew with pre-existing eye problems(including me)who was glued to the tv as a kid, didn't seem to suffer any permanent damage.

All my childhood life I heard that from my parents and even from my school teachers. Then as an adult I still didn't know if it was true, not for sure. And I have actually asked my eye doctor about it, more than once, and was always told it was true. Now just a few months ago I heard on the news, that it is not true. That it is a myth. I also read something about it on the internet I just don't remember where I read it. But who really knows for sure, I mean I have been wearing glasses since I was 10 years old and I am now 51 years old, so maybe my eyes went bad when I was a kid because of watching TV too close. Or maybe not.

My mom always told us that! But I wore glasses since I was 3 and never like tv much so there's the lie! I think it can strain your eyes but I doubt it makes them go bad.

No, I grew up on MTV and I was nose to television screen for many years. I've got such great vision I can see a tick on a blood hound in the next county. Its hereditary no degenerative. So pull up a chair and get out the Windex when your done watching your favorite show.

well yes you should keep a limited distace away from t.vas there are lot of harnful waves generated from t.v which is ot good to your eyes and also beig to close you are actually putting strai on your eyes as it has to decrease the focal length of the eye ,well a good day to you.

I'm beginning to think that it's an urban myth :X I spend a lot of time in front of the computer, it doesn't affect my sight at all.

I completely believe this. As a child I used to sit right infront of the tv for about five hours a day after school watching the kids programmes they air at about that time. Remember my mother on numerous occasions trying to get me to sit back from the screen but being a child you don't realise what damage your actually doing. A few years later my eyes have deteriated and I have been dianosed with myopia (short sightedness) which for the last ten years or so I have had to wear glasses or contact lenses. At the moment I am saving up for laser treatment as I have heard so many good things about it recently and the thought of getting up without having to route round for my glasses or struggle to put my contacts in when i'm still tired and normally end up poking myself in the eye sounds like too good a oppotunity to miss out on.

I have always heard that watching television too close can hurt your eyes, and I have also heard that watching too much television can hurt your eyes,I believe it is true even though I have never known anyone who sat to close to the television and then had to wear glasses, and my parents always taught me to sit a good ways back from the television whenever I am watching it,and I think it is a good idea, and parents should always make sure their kids do not sit right in front of the television because it is a bad habit.

no its a myth.. all it will due is cause eye strain which is temporary and/or a headache.. but long term no.. but also note you can get eye strain from reading a book or the pc.. so tv just keeps getting a bad rep
