I'm stuck

I've had this electrical problem for a few weeks now, and we've slowly been trying to figure out how to fix it. We started by checking the curcuit breaker, and that is not the problem. We also replaced the light fixtures and outlets in the working and non working areas. This has not solved our problem. What could be the cause of a large number of outlets and lights going dead? I seriously don't think it's possible for a mouse or other animal to have chewed through a wire.... these are very thick wires that take a lot of pressure to cut with wire cutters. We also do not have any of those little reset buttons. So I'm totally stuck! The problem is definitly in the house... I just can't figure out where. I'd hate to start tearing down walls and ceilings without having a clue as to where to begin. Does anyone have the slightest idea? I'm open to any suggestions that I haven't already thought of or tried.

Oh dear! I have no idea how to help. Once I was plugging up the TV in the bedroom and it tripped and broke all circuits in that room. Now the light won't come on. And none of the outlets work. I wish that I could help. Here's a link that I found that might help diagnose the problem. Best of luck, let me know how it works out. http://www.thecircuitdetective.com/tsing.htm#narrow

I've been reading that site since the problem started. I tried all the suggestions, nothing has worked. I guess tomorrow we're going to take the plunge and hire an electrician.
