open adoption allows the birth mother to chose the adoptive parents. She is able to even meet with them in most situations. In a lot of cases the adoptive parents allow visits to the child. There is no law that says the adoptive parents HAVE to allow the birth mother any rights. Some adoptive parents agree that they would allow the birth mother to see the child, and follow through with it, and others do not. The only thing a birthmother has to go on is trust that the people will follow through. Some say they are for open adoption then later forget they ever knew the adoptive mother and break all ties.

Thank you for educating me. I am tempted to believe that if the adopting parents and the mother of the child are mature and true to their word, then an open adoption probably works better for a child. I might be opening a can of worms if I ask why the mother of the child is giving up her child for adoption. If it is due to health reasons, open adoption makes sense.. if it is for reasons that the mother is unable to take care of the child.. then while open adoption is a good solution once a person is pregnant, I think the true solution lies in taking precautions towards not getting pregnant. Closed adoptions work too... but if the child finds out at a later date that they were adopted, it does cause problems... so I am for open adoption.. The only objection is the need to go in for an adoption..

I think that open adoption is better. It saves all the problems on down the road when the child wants to find the mother or the mother is looking for the child. If the child has lived with the knowledge their whole lives, they save a lot of emotional distress they would have later if they grew up not knowing.

thank you for your response. I also agree that it can help the child understand it. and not be hit with the "you were adopted talk" I would agree if a child knows that they are adopted while growing up that there would be less chance of problems in later years. It also would aid in them finding the birth parents if that is what they want to do...thanks again and God bless you!

I favor open adoption except in the case of rape or incest.... There are so many medical reasons that come up at one time or another and every child wants to know their roots. Their parents are the ones who raise them...but where they got their hair clour, eyes etc...that's important to. It's their heritage.

Yes knowing your roots and also for medical reasons is another advantage of open adoption. why do you feel in the case of rape it would not also be a good idea. Not that i do not agree i just wondered what your reason was..thank you for your response...
