I think I've thrown out my back

Has this ever happened to you? I was fine when I woke up... then the pain started and I don't remember what I was doing when it started. All I know is I had to bring the baby up for a nap and could barely make it up the stairs carrying him. Then I had to do laundry and that was a slow process because the pain was so bad. I called my husband to tell him, and he offered no comfort. He thought I was asking him to come home.. but I know he can't. I took some ibuprofen and am doing a little better, but the pain is still there. I've got so much I have to do today, but I'm just not going to be able to get it all done, I'm in so much pain!!

Ouch! I know your pain. I have back problems myself. You could have lifted something at an angle, or even slept in a different position and BAM the pain. Ibuprofen is a good start.Helps with any swelling. I have been known to lay on the floor propping my feet up on the couch. This helps me believe it or not. Also some time on the heating pad may do you some good. I hope this helps. Any chores will be there later. Try and take some time to deal with the pain and take care of yourself. I know easier said than done with a house full of kids.

I hadn't even thought of the heating pad. I'll probably lay on the sofa watching TV this afternoon and put the heating pad on it. I hope that works.

Sorry to hear about your back. For a couple days this past week hubby's back was hurting too. We tried a soft mattress topper and that helped out some. Hope things get better. Have you tried a hot bath? Sometimes that relaxes muscles that are in a spasm.

It's slowly getting better. I had a nice break yesterday so that helped with all the not having to pick up the kids so much.

I know what you're going through!!! If at all possible don't lift anything heavy for about a week. I know with a baby it isn't easy, but if you have to bring the baby downstairs for the day, do it. Lifting, twisting and turning will aggravate the back problem. Next, alternate heat with ice. Heat helps a lot, but the ice will reduce the swelling in your back and spine. While you're doing the heat and ice don't make sudden moves so you don't aggravate the problem. I also will lay on the floor with my feet propped on the couch and gently lift my back with my legs and gently move it to the left and right. It helps and sometimes adjusts the vertebrae. The biggest point is to try to take it easy and don't do heavy work for awhile. Your back will tell you when it's ready for the heavier work. I would find a different doctor by the way, with a self important idiot like that you really need to get a more caring and responsible physician. I would fire the jerk faster than ice melting in an oven!

I have 2 babies.. a 9 month old and a toddler, so not lifting is out of the question. They both get into everything and I constantly have to pick them up to put them elsewhere, or to change diapers, or put up for naps, etc etc. It's not easy.

Mine hurt really bad on Saturday. I don't know what I did either. I just read in another discussion that your back is still hurting. I hope you get some relief soon. I took some Aleve and it did not help. I took some Ibuprofen and it did not help. The only thing that helped at all was this arthritis cream I had my son put on my back.

Carrying babies and small children about is a really common way of injuring your back, so I bet that's how you did it. I hurt mine a few months ago putting the little one down on the patio. I just bent over with him and suddenly felt this really sharp pain down the side of my lower back and I couldn't stand up again. I had to crouch down until it subsided and it hurt for about two weeks altogether. I could only bend at a certain angle, so picking him up was a real challenge. thankfully he's big enough to walk himself, but doing things like nappy changes and getting in and out of the car seat were really hard. Please be careful! It's really easy to forget how delicate our backs are and how heavy our kids actually are when we're picking them up and putting them down all day. I do hope that you're feeling back to normal really soon. I know how hard it is to manage a household when you're not 100%.

I have had pain go down my leg. I have had days that I could not walk without a cane. I am not waling with a cane now. I haven't had this problem in about a year and a half. At that time I'd gone to the doctor's for it, and he looked at me with my chart in front of him and said "Well, you're not in your 20's anymore" Um... yes I am.. I was 26 at the time. Then he has the nerve to tell me my back problems are from lack of excersize. How do I have lack of excersize when I spend my day chasing after all these kids? To make matters worse he prescribed me a bunch of meds, and as it turns out I was pregnant with my youngest at the time and the meds were not supposed to be taken while pregnant. The idiot never bothered doing a pregnancy test before prescribing the meds.
