Do you have a child in a Charter school?

I have been reading about charter schools and how they are raising the test scores of kids who would otherwise have limited opportunities. Does anyone have first-hand knowledge of a charter school?

Both of my girls are in a charter school. They are in grades 5th and 1st. A few things that make the charter school better than the city schools here are: 1. Longer school days (school is from 9-4:30pm!!!) 2. Less days of during the school year 3. NO half days of 4. NO early dismissals on Wednesdays 5. Constant communication with the teachers 6. Strict dress codes 7. Afterschool programs 8. Saturday school for grades 3-5pm to prepare for state exams 9. Homework EVERY NIGHT and on WEEKENDS! (kids are not too thrilled but I am!) 10. Weekly communications and mandatory that parents sign off on tests and quizzes I love the charter school!!!

I can definitely see great benefit in the things you listed. My town does not have charter schools. I am planning on moving next year and one of the main criteria for where we will move to is the schooling they offer. If you don't mind my asking, what state do you live in?

I'm in the wonderful state of New York! The actual place I live in is Rochester, NY which is considered upstate New York...We're about 1.5 hours east of Niagara Falls Canada. And 6-8 hours from New York City (driving hours).

I hadn't really considered New York. I was looking into Pennsylvania but the schools seem to be a bit lacking in many areas. I will have to check out areas in New York.
