A little advice if you can help...tonsils

My 3 year old son has suffered the last two winters constantly with tonsilitis. After being constantly ill for almost 4 weeks, losing almost 1kg in weight and antibiotics not working he was finally referred to an ENT (Ear, Nose and Throat surgeon) to have his tonsils removed. The doctor wants them removed ASAP - within the next 6 months max, but the ENT only visits the town near us once a month & we see him on the 24th of this month. I am not sure what to expect as I have heard a few conflicting stories and was hoping someone could tell me what happened with their child. I am in Australia and would like to know how long he will be in hospital, what he will be allowed to eat following surgery and if I am to go in with him until he is put to sleep & if I can go into recover so I am there when he wakes up? I also have another son who is 17 1/2 months younger and need to organise my mum to have him while all this is happening as hubby will be busy with work. PS - I posted this in the children section to so sorry if you see it twice!

My 2 yr old just had this done in June. She was a little underage for the surgery but she was having other stuff that she really needed and was healthy so they did it also. We were with her until right before surgery. They gave us her sleepy mask for her to play with which was flavored cherry and she got aquainted with it and liked to lick it so when the time came, she actually fell asleep licking it! When it was time for the surgery, they let her ride on a little powerwheel to the or (we were not allowed to go in with her) and then when they got into the or they gave her the mask she had gotten to play with. She started licking it and they turned on the sleepy meds and she was out in 3 licks they said. My heart was breaking. When she was done, she was brought into recovery and as soon as she woke up they rushed me in, had me get in bed with her and comfort her and wheeled us both in the bed into her room. She seemed to be doing great the first 24 hours but as her scabs dried out and her throat dried out she got some bleeding. It stopped on it's own and she was completly back to normal within a week or so. I would say she had about 3/4 'bad' days out of the whole thing. The major thing is to keep them hydrated. The more they drink the faster they heal. The less they drink the more bleeding they are likely to have. My dr is one of the best in his field and has done thousands of these surgeries and my daughter was his very first bleeder so thats a positive...right... All in all, I was a wreck but she did well. And it's something that I won't have to deal with later on when the surgeries get harder.

Thanks for your reply! It's reassuring to know that even with the bleeding everything was ok for your daughter! My son is younger than they like them to be but they don't see an alternative now. The surgeon that will be doing it is very well known here & I haven't heard any bad stories. Thanks for sharing your experience!

My son had his out when he was about 8 I think, they let us go in to see him while they gave him a sedative then as they where going to wheel him away we kissed him good bye and that's when the worrying began like all parents when their baby goes under the knife our lives comes to a halt and we pray for their safety. Anyway he came out just fine and we got to see him after he came out of the recovery room. It was about a half hour, he was very very sleepy and kinda kookie from the meds. We took him home with a prescription for pain meds liquid kind and some liquid antibiotics. He was in a lot of pain I'm not gonna lie he cried a lot and he threw up once they said that might happen from the meds they gave him. After a few days of ice cream jello and cottage cheese scrambled eggs custard milk shakes he finally got better and was his old self again. I would say plan on setting about a week aside to take care of him maybe even get a babysitter to help with the baby so you can take care of him. Good luck the surgery only takes about 10 minutes to do but it feels like forever! LOL

Thanks for your response - and your honesty! I know it's not going to be easy, and it will be heartbreaking to see him in pain, but it's gotta be better than seeing him constantly ill doesn't it!
