What would you do with. . ..MYSTERY

I sat here and I kept hearing a banging. For many days, I've heard an occasional banging sound. Each time I checked the doors in the direction I heard it come from. All the doors were secure. There wasn't any banging when I went to look.
Finally, I went outside and saw the answer, pine cones were falling off our tree and hitting the metal roof on our porch. The pine cones are really falling off at a good clip now.
Now for my questions: What crafts have you done with pinecones? I've put glue on, glitter (now there is glitter glue, that eliminates one step), and yarn to make something to put on packages or to use as ornaments on a tree, but that's all I've done. I've been given pine cone starters before, they're dipped in stuff and it helps your fireplace get started better. Some make different colored flames and some don't. What ideas have you seen done, but haven't tried yet? Did you have a mystery to solve that had to do with a craft? Thanks.

No, no mystery to solve that had to do with crafts, but I have used pine cones in much the same way as you, glitter and yarn to make ornaments for the tree..Also spreading peanut butter on it and then dipping into bird seed..Hang it into a tree and you have a bird feeder..Also for arbor day one year, my son and I took a pine cone and made an owl with googly eyes that we glued onto a tree branch..We still have that too, it is in the kitchen in a container with dirt, sticking up like a plant..

I bet the birds loved that, that is a wonderful idea, esp. up here when it gets so cold, I often wonder how they don't all die when we have sub-zero for a long time. How did you do the owl? Googly eyes sounds cute or maybe even funny. So he looks like a plant now, from treebranch to plant. That sounds interesting. Thanks and take care.

It's not really a problem. I love using them up. But once you give a gift of them to everyone you know one way, you need another way to make them up.
So what do you like to use yours for?
I imagine that only certain places would have pines where you live. Thanks and take care.

If you do get some to work with, that will really be fun for you.
These are the first substantial ones, I've had good ones since I've moved here. When I was a kid, we had little trees and tiny cones that were paperthin, so we didn't really have any we could work with. These aren't as good as the ones in the midwest, but they do work for some crafts. In some of our state parks, they have the thicker, stronger cones. They also have better acorns.
Yes, I guess I could make them some fire starters. I'd also like something creative, fun, surprising. My brother and sister in law are very creative and when I surprise them, their eyes light up. They do have a wood stove, though and as long as I make them pretty clean burning, they would probably appreciate them. Thanks and take care.
You're speedy, you've been zipping around here like crazy. I can't keep up with you. Thanks and take care.

I've seen the pinecones with glitter on them when I lived up in Michigan. I've also seen them with the fake snow stuff sprayed on them and I've seen them decorated with little glass beads to look like Christmas trees. I haven't seen any around Missouri so I don't know if they even have them here.

I'm cruising through my inbox here today and found your discussions. Had to go through quite a few of your "started" ones to get to read this one! You have a lot of good discussions going actually.
Anyway, your discussion will probably be the impetus I need to make something with those pine cones falling all over my front lawn this year. I guess I will bake them too as that was what was holding me off on using them. We have brown recluse, black widows and scorpions out here and using those pine cones was giving me the willies. I'm thinking wreath and basket with fair lights!
And to answer your question, the mystery was what everyone was going to respond to your discussion for me lol.

It's been a long time and I think you're making up for it all in one day.
Use some really, really good leather gloves then and use ziplock bags before you put them in the oven without them. Our cooperative extention loves to tell people to let bugs suffocate in zip locks, but they could have eggs, so I would still heat them on low and watch them, don't let them start a fire. Take care.

It was very pretty.....I glued them together using a form....I think if you wanted to do them you should get those wreath forms that are made from straw....they would stick better...make sure you use ribbon or something to line the form with though so you can't see it through the pine cones....use the big ones for the main wreath and fill in with little ones....put a pretty ribbon on it when you are done....or something that hangs down with bells etc. Even better..little lights!

My brother could probably make me a form from extremely light wood. It does sound like yours was very pretty. Thanks and take care.

We bought an apple type basket filled with pine cones, little red fake apples and some white dried flowers. There were clear mini Christmas lights strung in between the pine cones. It made a beautiful arrangement beside the fire place. My Mom paid a horrible high price for the arrangement. I think she paid around $60 for it.
My only mystery when it comes to crafting is where is all the time to do the crafting I want to do. I am currently doing needle felting, sewing dog clothes for a craft show along with trying to get teddy bears finished for the shows. I have left over bits and pieces that I have tried to figure out what to do, but have figured it out in a couple of hours. Right now with attending college and trying to get good grades it is a bit hard to do my crafts as much as I wish to do. At least I can carry the needle felting with me in the car...I have a free hour for work because it's an hour drive from my home to town.

Don't feel like a "lazy oaf", we all work at the energy levels we have. I used to be able to relax a lot. I was injured on the job and live in constant pain. I discovered that the one way to control the pain is to be working whether it's outside doing hard work or when I sit down at night I work on teddy bears. In a big way I am running from the pain. I am going to post a picture of my needle felted teddy bears in the next couple of days...I can't believe how much fun I am having doing needle felting!!!
I had another idea about the pine cone baskets, and that is that you can use baskets that you find at the thrift shops and in with the pine cones you can include seasonal flowers like roses or sun flowers for spring and summer, mums for fall and poinsettias for Christmas. It should be kind of easy to find the silk flowers. You could also add cinnamon sticks in the Christmas basket to add that holiday fragrance. I will be taking my monster dogs for a walk and will have time to think of more ideas for pine cones...My "monster" dogs are mini dachshunds...Monica got loose this morning so I figure that they are ready to go out for a walk....plus I have my sister's lab/pitt mix that I am taking care of so the dog could use some exercise too.
Anyhow, don't compare what you accomplish to what I do. My Mom went crazy with all the work I would do without relaxing...

That sounds neat, the appley type basket with dried flowers and mini lights.
Little tiny worry dolls and clothes can be made with felting. So that would use up scraps.
You're very hard working. I feel like a lazy loaf compared to you. Good luck at college and the craft shows. Let us know how you do. Take care and thanks.

This reminds me of when we rented a rustic cabin one year and woke up to the sound of something thumping on the roof. It was hard to sleep that night because of the noise. We couldn't figure it out until the next morning when we realized that some huge pine trees were hanging over it and the cones had begun to drop.
I've seen those owls made of pine cones but have never tried them.

So you had a similar mystery. Atleast mine didn't keep me awake. I think there may be more than one way to make an owl with pine cones. Thanks and take care

I've seen some really nice door wreaths made with pinecones. Some were colored and some not. You might be able to string them together and add a bell at the bottom to put on your front door. Could also add a big bow in the center made of ribbon. Have also seen pinecones spray painted white to use as table decorations. Items I have seen were holiday related and so cool.

Spray painted white with a little glitter or some tiny ornaments might be cool. Thanks and take care.

I found a vendor at the craft show I went to on Saturday, with baskets filled with pine cones. It looked like she glued them together in the basket and they appeared to have a light glitter applied to them.
Pine cones are rather abundant where I live...the Pine Barrens in NJ is quite close and you could probably fill a paper bag with a short walk in the woods.
I've gloss glazed them to make ornaments for the Christmas tree and when we make door ornaments, we often attach a couple of smaller pine cones.
Our 5 yo brought one home the other day and left it on my crafting table for me. My hubby didn't know he brought it in the house and when I sat down to work on a project later that evening, I had a few bugs crawling around on my table...so beware when you bring them in your home, something may be living in those pine cones...

Sorry to come into your reply, robin, but I couldn't get this picture to upload in mine..I thought I could upload more than once in a reply, or maybe there is a glitch and this one won't upload..
But I did read what you said, thank you, I hate bugs, next time the cones are going onto the back porch until it is debugged..lol

Good thing to remind people, we put them on aluminum foil and heat them up to 140 degrees for a little while, that generally kills everything.
Those sound like nice projects. Glad you replied, thanks and take care.
