Barbeque --- Is it a Man thing?

October 7, 2008 6:44am CST
Hey all, I was having a debate with my sister about cooking and the topic landed somehow on the issues of Barbeque, which makes my sister's blood boil. She reckons the barbeque culture is so unfair and is created specially by men to show off their cooking skills when they do not have any. This is her side of the story: " We have to decide on the menu, get the shopping done, marinate the dishes and get everything else ready in time for the big feast including setting the tables in the garden and candles. And the boys come along, open a can of beer, put the meat in the grill tossing it few times and say that they have prepared an excellent dish. Well, I personally do not see anything wrong in that, ofcourse we boys do not show off and we are only trying to help them and save them from standing near the grill and getting their make up ruined. What do you think guys? Please do not tell me my sister is going a bit loopy? lols. i hope she does not read this.....

It is not just a man thing, as when I was a lot younger, as well as a lone parent, I use to do the barbecue and have all my female friends round. Since I have been married, its my husband that has to do them. I am not fussy if it is a woman or a man that do a barbecue, as long as the foods is nice and is cooked properly, as they are the things that really do matter.

Sorry, but first off being female and secondly from the South......I have found that there is more to it than just 'flippin the meat a couple of times' and it's ready. When my s/o is going to grill something (we bbq in the South, 'we' grill in the northeast lol) he goes to the store, picks out the meat, and whatever side dish, he does it all. Which is fine by me, there are a lot of things I can do, but picking out a good cut of meat.......that's his department. lol. So basically all I have to do is sit down to eat, he does the rest. So I happen to love it when he grills, means I don't have to do any cooking, grocery shopping, all I have to do is sit down and eat. And for your sister, it does take some cooking skills to grill a steak to just the right medium rare, juicy, and so tender it melts in your mouth....and sorry to say, not every male can do that.
