Second opinion?

When I am not well, I always go and see the doctor. But one doctor's diagnosis is not enough for me, so I always go and get second or even third opinion to confirm the earlier diagnosis. The reason is I need to make sure that I am not wrongly diagnosed. What about you? Do you seek doctor's second opinion or stick to only one?

It is a good idea to get a second opinion, if the illness appears to be serious one. But if it is a minor one, I think, opinion of a one good Doctor is enough. There is no harm in getting second opinion, some go for even three. I rely on my Doctor and untill and unless the illness is grave, I do not go for the second opinion.

I guess you are right. But I have a story to tell about one of my friend who was having flu and a bit of difficulty of breathing. He went to see two doctors at different time and day and both doctors told him that he was not seriously ill. He was given flu medicine and something to ease his breathing. But as his condition worsen, he rushed to the emergency and later the doctor who attended him diagnosed him for heart failure and water in the lungs. So for me, misdiagnosis can happen.

Sorry to hear about your friend's illness which could not be tracked be the previous Doctors. I agree with you that there is no harm if you go for second opinion, it would always be safer for the patient to get different views on his illness.

If I am in need of some surgical procedure I will definitely go for another opinion, if it is something minor like a cold then I will just see my one doctor.

Most people will do the same because sometimes we just couldn't accept that we have major health issues.

It really depends on what is wrong with me. If it is a simple cold. Than i don't go to more than one doctor. As I can't afford to go to that many doctors. If it was something like cancer, they wanted to remove a part of my body or I was going to die. I would than go and get a second opinion.

We have only one doctor and it was hard to get an appointment, but when he saw that I had a lump in my br*st he sent me to get tests down town. There is no second doctor to get an opinion on since that might take months and by months it would be too late. If I had the money and if we had private practice and there were more doctors, I would get a second opinion. If I am all right, then all I need to do is to improve my diet so not to get what I fear it is. But I am of the age when most lumps are.

I hope your tests are negative. Over here we have so many private practice and that make us easy to go from one doctor to another. But then again, too many opinions make one confuse especially if the diagnosis are different.

hi ellie 26 I seldom seek a second opinion as I am a diabetic and a lot of my viists are just routine visits. If I had some other health problems I usually just go to my primary care doctor ashe has been my doctor for many years and I trust him explicitly. if he feels I need to see a specialist he will refer me to one.

I think sometimes if we are comfortable with one doctor, we usually will put our confidence in him/her.

I have confidence in my doctor so I don't go for second opinions. I've had the same doctor for 10 years and I trust him 100%. If I didn't I wouldn't be going to him with any health problems.

I wish I had your confidence. It is always hard for me to stick to one doctor's opinion. I guess I read too many stories about how doctors can sometimes make wrong diagnosis and patients end up suffering more.
